Horrible Dental Receptionist

Wow, I just had the worst experience ever!

I booked an appointment to have mine and hubby’s teeth cleaned at BELMEAD DENTAL in west edmonton as we are new to the area. A. I left without having my teeth done & B. I left in tears. Sooooo mad.

I filled out my information and was ready to go have my cleaning when the receptionist told me to remove my jacket and boots and leave them out in the lobby. Well… the shoes sure, but No, I would like to take my new $300 jacket with me thanks. She proceeds to tell me to leave it again, I said I didn’t feel comfortable leaving it so she responded with “you have to wear through your cleaning then” ….. uhhhhhhhhh? “So, you’re saying that There is no hook or chair inside I am allowed to use to put my belongings? Purse, jacket, keys, phone etc….?”

Lady gets mad at my question and full out, purple faced starts screaming at me. IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE OFFICE. The dentist came out to diffuse the situation, I was brimming with tears horrified at The embarrassment of how she was publicly treating me, and The fact that I was being screamed at for asking an honest normal everyday question…that really I was not in the wrong for. The Dentist asked her 5 times to stop yelling, he then yelled at her for yelling at me & SHE CONTINUED ON!!!!! Could not believe it. I could tell that nothing was going to be done about this as it seemed like normal behaviour based on how the dentist handled it, and the fact that she completely ignored him not fearful of repercussion. I cancelled mine and hubbys appointments and left. Called hubby from car to tell him his appointment was cancelled and what happened, and he proceeded to tell me she was a piece of work over the phone too….

So, we went next door to ABC dental. The staff was fabulous and we have our appointment tomorrow (they even squeezed us in so we could use our benefits this year) Ultimately it seems we ended up in the right place, but I really just wanted everyone to know about Belmead Dental and the psycho they have working the desk.

  2. Policies are there for a reason. Maybe there isn’t room for extra bulk because it becomes a hazard. What if someone tripped over it an hurt themselves. Usually there are reasons for policies

I used to deal with Belmead Dental….we left as well due to the receptionist…which is the dentists wife. She is terrible when it comes to customer service.

She is the most unprofessional one i have ever dealt with. We switched dentists because of her as well. She is definitely not exaggerating in the least.

  6. Nobody deserves to be treated that way, regardless of the situation. If they can’t provide a secure place for you to put your belongings, then they should accommodate and have a coat rack nearby the dental chair.

Sorry you had such an awful experience. Seems as though you aren’t the first person to walk out of that place. All the best to you. Hope your appointment tomorrow is less dramatic than the one you had today.

  12. I have been going here for years and have never ever witnessed nor been treated like this. Leave your shoes on mat and coat on hook provided. Your seriously had to argue about that. Beyond those doors are sterile. Have respect. The dentists wife has always been sweet therefore I am guess the poster was probably being an ass and if she esculated things in that office I call BS that she is the innocent one.

  15. I went to a hair appointment at reputable salon, locked my purse in my car, and just stuck my visa card in my inside coat pocket. Hung my jacket up on a hanger less than 10 feet from the reception desk. Visa card was gone 2 hours later when I was done. People will steal shit anywhere if there’s opportunity. I would never leave my jacket or anything else of value out of my view again. Even some more expensive shoes and boots I’d be hesitant about. Thieves are always looking for opportunity.

Aw shucks, someone else that doesn’t follow the rules and got burned, then cries wolf.

    • Rule or no rules, that lady actually does need to chill though! She’s got a very nasty attitude for someone who works with patients. I had to turn around and walk away from her lippy ass one day as well and never went back there. I have heard the same woman losing it in Walmart because the person was telling her where an item was instead of delivering it into her hands. She’s really too much! (If I was the OP, I might have just went down and locked my jacket in my trunk).

You defuse the situation by following their rules from the get go. It’s called adulting and it’s not that hard.

      [0]
    • Unless they have specific insurance to cover the cost of the loss of my personal items if stolen then i will not leave my items in a public area where anyone could steal them. If they dont want coats or shoes in the exam room then they have to provide a secure location to leave the item like a locker with a lock. I am sure if her jacket was stolen they would not have replaced it. If the rules make no actual sense it has nothing to do with being an adult if you question the rule. Regardless of this rule or her questioning the rule, no one should be treated like this its obvious the dentists wife was not being a respectful representative of the office. Customer service is customer service. I can tell you I would be reprimanded or terminated if i spoke to a client like that even if i was in the right.

They don’t have to provide squat. It’s the rules if their office. A private business. I’ll also add that 99% of their clients follow said rules or leave their shit in their cars. The poster is initially at fault. Once she started arguing it escalated. After that then I will agree the receptionist didn’t handle it well.

    • I would have kept my coat on if I was given that option and was concerned about leaving it unattended, unless that option wasn’t presented before the receptionist started yelling. If there was loss of personal items without replacement, a civil suit could follow. Your personal item are not safe with in your car, it actually makes the vehicle a better target. Regardless of what percentage of the people follow the rule without question this was the posters first visit she was unaware of the rule before arriving at the office. The actions of the receptionist are inexcusable even if the poster had been at any fault. There is no good reason for a person in any role, especially one that deals with paying clients to berate, embarrass or yell.

  20. I believe the poster ask a very reasonable question- why are they not hooks in the room to hang purses or coats? I would not leave my coat or boots where someone can help themselves to my items.

My question to the poster is : why did you stand there and take the so-called abuse? Why didn’t you just leave? What did you have invested in the place other than 10 minutes? Again- way to melodramatic lol

  23. I’m so sorry for your horrible experience. There comes a point when in a disagreement you just have to appease the person and make it not a big deal. Why it would bother her so much is beyond me. I’m sorry you felt embarrassed, it should never get to that level. I have been on the other side, in her shoes as the one providing service and care when some people just come angry and treat you poorly and try to escalate the situation. It just is unacceptable. I also find this time of year people are way more cranky and have less patience. I’m glad you found a place where they treated you better because at the end of the day, it’s about patient care and making you feel comfortable.

Every dentist I’ve ever been to in 3 provinces has a chair or hook inside the exam room to put your belongings on so they don’t have to assume responsibility for lost or stolen property.

I was caught off guard being asked to take my boots off as I had never seen this growing up in Ontario

  26. Have been going to the dentist for many years, hell I even worked for one, as well as in a Medical Clinic. Never have I been asked, or asked someone to leave their personal items in the reception area. Had I treated a client like this receptionist did, my position would have been terminated. At both places the wives of my bosses were in the offices frequently and they treated everyone with the utmost respect. I can only imagine how this particular dentist`s wife treats the co-workers….

    [0]
  27. She is probably related to the dentist. That’s the only way I can see her getting away with this crappy behaviour.

  28. Sorry you had a negative experience. Going to the dentist is stressful enough

I’m not buying the one side to this. NOT at all. It doesn’t add up. Poster seriously had a meltdown over hanging up a coat.?? GROW UP. You ever consider there might be safety policies in place about taking big bags and coats into a private room with Any med professional? OMG… And that stupid coat caused your hysterical breakdown. If the receptionist was his wife I’m sure she can afford to buy 20 of yours lol. Maybe drop the drama next time so you don’t cause a scene at the next place.
