Rant about hospital parking

First off, I understand that hospitals need to charge for parking so that patients can park, but they really should be better ways to pay other then coins and credit cards.

I was at Royal Alex toady (Dec 14, 2017) and had to pay for park. Now normally I take the bus as I don’t drive, but today my mother offered to drive me to my appointments. I knew I would have to pay for parking but was hoping that the payment machines take debit cards, as when I have cash my Hubby takes it. But nope, had to use the ATM and then the only place to buy items does not do spare change (no problem) so I bought a small milk. This gave me just enough coin for an 50 mins.

Maybe they should look at an app for phomes like other parking lots have, cuz My ticket expired while at my appointment. Or maybe have this machines except bills as will as coins.

  6. Fyi hospital parking tickets are private they don’t effect your license or insurance..they are so over priced and not user friendly esp..A nurse told me that as I was in a situation I couldn’t get to the meter in time

    [0]
    • the money raised from the parkades helps to offset hospital costs not covered by government funding. by cheating the meters you are you are cheating the health care system for you and I. also your car can be towed

      [0]
    • Some do some go to private companies I know I have worked with the companies..but honestly sometimes your in a crisis and can’t get back in time..my point was not to be to concerned and no they can’t tow you

      [0]
    • yeah, they can tow you. if youre trespassing on private property, ie not paying for parking, they can tow you.

      [0]
    • Carla they have you record your license plate in the meter and they record it when they ticket you. As it’s private property they can more or less charge as they please or remove you as they please. And they will. At your expense no less.

      [0]
    • They won’t tow you for a few hrs and it’s a private ticket so it doesn’t affect you..I’ve worked in property management and with various parking companies

  7. The apps are useless too. Don’t take debit or visa debit and you have to add at least $25 to it to use. Why parking machines don’t take debit is beyond me. It’s 2017.

  8. Forget all this and I think we should not have to pay for parking at hospitals period. It’s not like we are at the hospital for a night on the town. I would be interested in knowing how many people are off set visiting a loved one in the hospital due to the fact they have to pay for parking. A lot of people are living paycheque to paycheque and this may be one of those expenses they did not bargain for. Slice it however you want I think parking should be free at the hospitals.

    [0]
    • I agree! It is free in Leduc and Devon at the hospitals there. Not only does it cost at Edmonton hospitals to park but it’s pricey too!

      [0]
    • It is a total opportunistic move from the hospitals in this city. I have sent in my thoughts to our Health Minister. Is anything being done about this? ..I highly doubt it. Not when it comes down to the almighty $$. Sad but true.

    • This will mean free parking for U of A students and free parking for downtown parking or for Rogers Place.

      [0]
    • We are lucky that we live in a province that has free healthcare I think parking is the least of our worries.

Agreed! Even in emergency room parking or cancer treatment stuff like that what a joke it’s made tougher on families by having to worry about how you will pay for parking

      [0]
    • I totally agree. No one chooses to go to hospital…..free at malls. Casino…makes no sense.

      [0]
    • Those of you that disagree are not thinking straight at all. The hospitals are funded left right and center and if you think you have not paid for medical services you are seriously lacking WHY? Cause you pay for it in your taxes.!!!! Free my ass!

      [0]
    • Sure you want to compare apples to oranges visiting a dying relative as opposed to a night out at the hockey game! That is ridiculous

      [0]
    • Marilena Bombino So if we don’t agree with you then we aren’t thinking straight? Parking around some hospitals is premium real estate. The problem with “free” is that it will absolutely be abused.

Not all parking at malls is free. Ever shop downtown?

The point is that parking is a revenue generator for hospitals. You also have other options to get to hospitals. How about giving up your car and catching the LRT from a park and ride site?

      [0]
    • Alden Gushnowski What about people that have small sick children, should they park and ride as well?

      [0]
    • I agree it is expensive, but I also think if it was free, everyone would park there, leaving no parking for people actually going to the hospital. Then what?

Honestly it sucks but even the staff at hospitals pay for parking. It’s just another part of life…

    • Donna Whitford How do people without cars manage to get to the hospital?

      [0]
    • I totally agree with this. I went for a routine appointment while pregnant. Was told I had to be admitted immediately. I had to go and drive my car home and then taxi back because my hubby was out of town and I was afraid of the fees. It is an absolute cash grab that takes advantage of some that are weak and vulnerable. Why not provide vouchers? Have people speak to the nurse for their loved one and they get a voucher off parking or something.

      [0]
    • Alden, was just going to say that. If hospital parking was free everyone would park at the RAH and just walk over. There wouldn’t be a parking space in sight

      [0]
    • If your car is in the parkade for longer then a day just hit the parking button that you lost your ticket. Sooo much cheaper!

      [0]
    • When you are faced with a death of a loved one in hospital and all that entails come back to me and talk to me about taking public transit Alden Gushnowski

The money does not go to the hospitals. The money goes to the company that monitors the meters. There was a w5 episode about this topic. Parking at hospitals should be free and plentiful. It’s not like people go there to hang out for a good time.

  10. I would not want a single cent of tax money diverted from healthcare to pay for people’s parking. The money would need to come from somewhere – and I am not sure what service they would need to cut. Yes, free stuff is nice – but we are so very lucky to have access to public healthcare – I am happy to pay for parking and grateful I am not needing hospital parking very often. Americans would love to have this problem over their healthcare costs.

There is also change machines inside every door to make change to pay for the parking there as well.

    [0]
    • Ya but you have to leave your vehicle mean while ticket dude is walking around and nails you with a ticket because your inside getting change! It happens. A lot!

I lived at WWX when two friends were hospitalized…. I like to think I saved health care dollars by how these visits offered support and caring to my friends while they were ill …charging for parking is adding insult to injury… watching seniors and family members with frail patient fussing with parking machines broke my heart!

  14. I still have a ticket for parking at the royal Alex while pregnant. It was 10pm, at work I started bleeding so i rushed over to emergency and had no change or credit card on me. The store with the ATM was closed and I was not about to drive or walk around the block looking for one. I thought my baby was dieing, fuck that. So the city ticketed me $60 and I refuse to pay. That’s bull shit in my mind

  15. If it was impark they do have an app you can pay online or pay by phone

  16. Last year I was at the Stollery, and downstairs in the main level bathroom, a young woman was crying into her phone. She hadn’t expected to be admitted…and her parking charges were bigger than she could afford. So she couldn’t go home in her car. It’s not only a pain in the ass to try and pay (and they’re all different )…but really expensive, too. There should be a special rate for certain situations.

  17. I think once you are admitted for care ( several days) you should get w killer deal. $20 for a week or whatever. Appointments, visitors and such I’m okay with. I’m sure it offsets a lot of costs too

Red Deer Regional Hospital. Best hospital parkade by a mile. Huge ass parking spots and wide lanes for big redneck trucks – easy pay options everywhere without running back and forth to your vehicle.

  20. This is why I go mostly to Sherwood Park hospital. Free parking. The parking fees at hospitals are atrocious. We’re already there because were really sick no need to raid our pockets for needing help.

Well you’re lucky enough to find parking. I was visiting my dad and had a hell of a time trying to find parking.

  22. Grey Nuns has the Honk Mobile app machines, I love it. I pay with my phone, takes a minute and can extend while sitting at the hospital. Time to get with the times. Agreed, I hate those old machines.

  23. I usually park in the residential neighbourhood near the hospital and walk a few blocks because I can’t afford it.

  24. The price for hospital parking is insane! My uncle was hit by a car as a pedestrian, and almost didn’t make it. He spent 6+ months at Royal Alex and Glenrose. My family spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to be at his bedside.

    • Sadly sounds about right. Cost us $1800 when I had my emerg 5 and half hr surgery in the trauma unit at the U of A almost septic and in there a month. Living out of town had no choice but to take a vehicle

    • Sadly sounds about right. Cost us $1800 when I had my emerg 5 and half hr surgery in the trauma unit at the U of A almost septic and in there a month. Living out of town and semi private room meant my husband couldn’t stay the night had no choice but to take a vehicle

  25. I can’t stand that too!! I’m at the hospital regularly. It’s a pain in the ass trying to rush around getting change when you forget to do it, can’t get around to it yet, or last minute appointment, emerg. I pay so much I claim it on taxes. Those damn machines need to take bills and like you said, debit. Not everyone Has credit cards!! And $2.25 for half hr? And then half the time it won’t take your handful of change. Come on now!! I was in there for a month and it costs what, $22 a day. We came up with a brilliant plan since the car was in the parkade for so many days. Just hit that you lost your ticket. It’s a 1 day charge then.

  26. We shouldn’t have to pay for parking at hospitals period. You can park at California hospitals for free!

    [0]
  27. It is an antiquated system. If it were truly not a cash cow they wouldn’t charge sick people and their loved ones for parking. No one parks at a hospital who doesn’t have a reason to be there.

    [0]
  28. Absolutely if parking was free at the hospital, you’d have to be there by 7am to get a parking spot anytime you needed it! Those lots would be so full, especially the ones with LRT access. The best you could maybe make an argument for would be a voucher or validation system. However lately at the grey nuns, despite the fact that it is pay parking and it’s actually not super hard to find street parking around there, the pay parking lot has been packed full by late morning with people making up their own parking spaces.
