A Friendly Reminder to Edmonton Cyclists

There are rules for cyclists for a reason! You don’t get to pick and choose which you obey because it makes your life easier, it puts you and those around you in danger. Follow the law or it’s only YOUR fault if you get hurt.

Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles and must obey all rules of the road. They’re allowed on all roads as well as shared-use pathways, bike lanes and bike routes. Cyclists must ride as close to the curb as is safe and only ride in single file except when passing another vehicle.

This includes WALKING your bike across intersections if using shared sidewalks (when the walk signal is on), stopping at stop signs and red lights if on the road. If you can’t obey the laws walk or take the bus!

  1. Cyclists are an integral part of our transportation system as they act as speed bumps when you run them over.

  3. This is the perfect post after what I saw today. Heading east on Wye Rd —4 lanes/2 directions. 100km/per hour road. A cyclist in his full biking outfit going full speed from south to north……looks both ways about three times and just kept FLYING thru the stop sign at RR 223. This was rush hour traffic in both directions. Too close of a call and it didn’t even fizz him. That guy would have been roadkill if we didn’t all hit the brakes.

  9. So wait they shouldn’t ride up either ridiculously fast or crawl up behind on the sidewalk and say nothing as they do it????

People get upset, not because they dislike cyclists, but because they don’t want to injure or kill someone by accident

  14. Depends, buddy. I think drivers can be just as inept at cyclist rules lol.

I agree!! It goes for parents teaching thier kids the rules of riding bikes…its all in the want and need to be safe for all invovled for myself. But with that said there is alot of bikers that should follow certain common sense learned when your in elementary, rules of the road! It’s for your safety…

  17. Thanks for posting this. Cyclists on sidewalks truly annoy me. And they glare at you if you bring it to their attention that they are in the wrong.

  18. Honking at a cyclist is very dangerous; the person could fall into traffic. Please don’t do this… More bike lanes would help so cyclists feel safer in traffic. If I can, I try to stay off the busy streets.

  19. If you dont have a motor you shouldnt be on the road with other dangerous motor vehicles. How about widen the sidewalks a foot and paint a line down the middle and have bike lanes where it is safe for bicyclists

  20. Madge says:

Even with cycling sidewalks offered the cyclists ignore then and still drive on the road.
Also, the highway they ride should pust signs on how to bime on the highway. NOT on the yellow/white line, ithey should ride on the shoulder lane where they are out of harms way

  21. Just watched a car lay on its horn for a 7 or 8 year old kid riding his bike in the crosswalk, and then with less than a foot between them he tears out in front of the kid to make his turn. Kid almost ran right into his car. Granted, his parents need to teach him better or he needs to listen to the rules but 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
