Benefits Provider

I’m opening a small business with about 5 staff to start in the Edmonton area and looking for a benefits provider that offers 100% coverage plus a health spending account, is easy to work with, allows direct billing and offers fair rates.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

  1. It’s going to be super expensive as that is a small group. Blue cross is the easiest by far. So many other company’s use a portal thru Telus and it’s a huge pain in the arse trying to reach them. So I definitely say try blue cross first.

    DONT USE BLUE CROSS!!!
    1000 A YR ONLY
Try Great West Life… sunlife or Desjardins
My husband has a small comp same amount if staff and uses Desjardins
Blus cross costs to much fir very little coverages as in max 1000 a yr we just looked at this recently

Blue cross might be best with a smaller group, but their drug coverage isn’t as good as some of the other companies. It really depends on your needs.

Direct billing is up to the provider. some dentists, masssge therapists, chiro etc want to be paid for services same day and thus wont direct bill. Insurance companies will often hold payments to providers and pay twice a month for all claims submitted.

  10. I don’t know about costs but as an employee Blue Cross was great. Great West Life is brutal to deal with. I have heard good things about Sunlife

Get a broker to find you the best option. Self funding is a great option if you have the money up front to do it and set the right limits so that you’re not left paying for meds that are tens of thousands per dose. Whatever doesn’t get used rolls over to the next year, and thresholds are lower so you can have more heath spending before they raise rates on you
