Clareview Library is Ridiculous

Not sure at what point a library stopped being a quiet place to study/read.

Why do people think it’s okay to laugh loudly, talk on the phone, etc. Why are you even there? Especially at a place like Clareview rec centre where there are dozens of common areas with tables and chairs where it is not rude to sit and talk/make noise.

Why does the staff at this library do nothing when noise reaches an unacceptable level?

  1. Lol, Jasper place is just as bad too!!! The other day a mom sitting on the computer letting her kids run wild not watching them setting off the alarms by the door, running outside with toys from the kid section, this child was maybe 2yrs old. After watching him push the handicapped doors open and head towards the parking lot I went and got him and took him to the desk and said he needs his mom they just looked at me.like I was strange. His got somewhat angry because we disturbed her internet time. What else do you do?

    • Take the toddler to main office and say you found him alone in the parking lot…….child welfare perhaps ???

    • I saw this at another Rec centre……mom put 2 1/2 year old into play area and sat outside the room using her laptop…..signs clearly say child must have adult supervision !!! Child was getting upset, had dirty diaper , and had no one to go to. Another adult pointed her mom out to me. I went to the front desk and told them ….they had to come deal with the mother. I could have walked out with the child and she wouldn’t have noticed!

    • It’s unfortunate but I always see a least one or mom’s like that when I take my daughter anywhere. Course she’s 8 and I get slack from family and friends for not letting her go to a public bathroom alone. The way I see it any child any age can get into trouble and there is still adults out there who could harm a child. I do not hesitate to get the mother and 80% of the time they seem to get mad at me for doing so.

  2. I agree with you. That is why I go in pick up the books I need and leave. There have been many a problem at this rec centre. And it only seems to be getting worse instead of better.

  3. There are designed areas that are quiet only spaces. You can go sit there

  4. NO RESPECT! Up to Staff to enforce it!!

  5. I stopped reading at clareview. As someone who lived in that area for 7 years and finally escaped that abyss. What did you expect from clareview libraries?

  6. My college has literally made “quiet rooms” that you can book out for a block because library’s no longer follow the same rules they used too.

I agree with the quiet room concept… a library is a great place for children’s programs and an easy place to meet for collaborative projects, but a “quiet zone” is also necessary Edmonton Public Library

  11. Sadly enough, at white mud crossing you have to hope one. Of the “quiet rooms” is open in order to get any quiet at the library.

  12. even the whitemud one is terrible. i stopped going. the kids are SO loud..even the older ones who should know better. its up to the parents to make sure their kids are behaving properly at a library and most of them don’t even..it’s frustrating because i go there to do homework with my boys and read.

  13. Funny you posted this. I just left Millwoods Library because of all the noise from old men sitting around and talking loudly either to eachother or on their phones. Be quiet or go back to the mall.

    • The mall is just as bad. Most especially in the food court area. Yeah I find that annoying as well but it seems to get worse when the kids are out of school. One day a whole hoard of teenagers come into the library yelling, cussing, running around. They told them to leave only to have them go outside and start damaging the trees. I don’t feel safe when I’m there. They call security and they don’t do much except tell them to quiet down. They don’t listen.

  14. Maybe you could go there and tell them to be quiet…?? LOL

  15. Grow a pair and politely ask someone to keep their voice down. Life does not cater to you.

  16. Where are the librarians in these places. I would report it to whoever the Chief of Edmonton Libraries is now.

  17. People are so wrapped up in their own bubbles that they “forget” that their actions are rude to others. Unfortunately, I imagine those poor librarians are tired of being the Quiet Police to the entitled. Never-ending battle!

  20. Libraries are brutal for that!

It’s one thing to have a kids group going on. It’s controlled my the librarian running it. But libraries are loud now.

  22. We discovered the other day that the Rimbey Library is NOT a Quiet Library. This is a new Concept. The rule there is that talking laughing joking around is aloud.

  23. I had to do some research tonight and just packed it in. Too noisy . I remember the days when you could hear a pin drop in the library. Not anymore. I will try again on the weekend. Good post I was thinking about writing the same post.

  24. I take my students to do a tour of the library and librarians will tell the kids it is okay to laugh and make noise. It isn’t a super quiet place any more. I get it though…loud and obnoxious is another thing entirely.

    • Yes! It’s ok to laugh or enjoy yourself but you don’t have to be rude or disrespectful to others around you. I’ve been at Clareview and the number of times parents leave kids screaming bloody murder at the top of their lungs is crazy. they don’t even take them outside or try to calm them down!

I assumed you also contacted the library about this? Not much point complaining here if you’re hoping it’ll change
