Dogs are not cargo!

Hello!

If you wouldn’t put your child in the back of your pickup and drive around, you shouldn’t put your dog there either.

Dogs are NOT cargo. It is NOT safe for them in the box of a truck.

Stop doing this.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk

Signed,
the person behind you in traffic who watched your dog slam into your cab and careen into the side of your box when you slammed on your brakes to make a turn you almost missed.

PS – I almost rear ended you when you did that. I would have been more sad about killing your dog than if I would have hurt you.

  1. My dog’s wouldn’t go into cab of truck they jumped in the back before I could put tail gate down they never needed to be tied down they loved it always wanted to go everywhere with us in the truck only thing was we drove like we had dog’s in the back no sudden turns we drove carefully don’t say people can’t love there pet’s cause they put them in the box of a truck cause I loved my dog’s and they loved me too

  2. This post has been going on and on and on….. They are animals!!!! Wasting time on a dog in the back of a pick up, who looks happy, and loving life…. yet kids are starving, missing, homeless, abused etc. People on here complain about THE dumbest things on this site. It’s ridiculous already

  5. Shaun Merritt hey now! lol!!

  6. Why didn’t you call EPS? It is against the law unless the animal is secured safely and not in any potential harm.

  7. Penny Miller Penny Miller says:

People have a choice…dogs are having the decision made for them. They dont think like we do….they just jump…not LOOK OUT…I CAN’T HANG ON or IM SLIPPING….HELP!!!!

    Sometimes, they think better…

  8. Is it me or are 99% of people saying mind your own business look like the off the farm hick pc voters and ya have no real argument for doing it lol

  9. From a paramedics opinion and experience, unless u buckle the dog in with a proper harness in the interior of a vehicle, the best place for them is in the box…not in a cage or tethered in. A dog’s reaction is faster and the chances of him leaping out and saving himself is higher than in a cage or tethered.

  10. I agree its so frustrating seeing trucks barrel down the highway with their pooch in the back of the truck

  11. I rode In the back of trucks all of the time when we were kids it was a blast

  12. I guess just put the dog in the seat and strap him in with a seatbelt since he’s the same as a child right? That makes perfect sense right?

  13. As kids…we always rode in the box if the truck

But we knew better to hang off the side.
Dogs don’t know an love having the face in the wind..an hang off the side of a truck.
I learned not to put a dog in the box when one jumped out to chance a squirrel …at the stop sign at 5th an foothills..

  14. Safety first kids! 😉

  15. Diane Wilson Diane Wilson says:

I once saw a rottweiler spill out of tbe back of a truck onto 118st. He came so close to being run over. We pulled over and managed to get the dog off the road and called the number on the dog’s collar….the owner didnt even realise the dog had fallen out of tbe truck bed. It hurt my soul to give such a nice dog back to such an irresponsible asshole.

  16. Saw another idiot at Grey Nuns Hospital today with his black-faced shepherd in the back of his pickup. The dog was NOT comfortable. We need a law against this.

  17. Dogs are fine in the back of a pickup. As long as it is trained properly. For someone to complain about this is just stupid. Its a dog not a human being. FFS learn the difference.

  18. It’s rotten to do this to your dog ! If you do this you deserve to put on a leash and tied up in a truck bed!

  19. Should constitute an “unsafe load” under the current legislation. And, if not, should.

  20. I lost my dog 2 blocks from home he was my boy it’s been 14 years and I haven’t gotten another one he slipped out and broke his back I tell everyone I see doing it to stop

im so sorry for your loss. That is a tough lesson learned and althoufh this is very sad, im glad u learnt from it and passing on the wisdom. May your boy rest in peace

we are moving into the new Nazi Germany era in the west now; if you see something, say something; I am willing to bet that your neighbors find you very pleasant to live near.

  23. Oh man…my mom lost her beloved dog this way, back in the 80s…he fell out the back and got killed by the vehicle behind. I do NOT reccomend transporting your dogs this way

  24. What would these Anonymous people do with out social media? Oh that’s right mind their own business. No one died ! Posting a plate number will do what actually ?

  25. Ahhh, bubble wrappers!!!

  26. I hate this so much. My dogs come in my vehicle no matter how dirty or furry they are. There are these magical things called seat covers you can buy to help with that

  27. “If you wouldn’t do that to your child then you shouldn’t be doing it to your dog” I’m So fed up with these dog related topics lately! Like we understand that dogs are nice animals but they’re still ANIMALS. So stop comparing them to human children!!!

    • Please don’t ever get a pet. If you can’t treat them like family, you don’t deserve them.

    • Mahassine Lamghari agreed!!!!!! Dogs are NOT children, and they arent comparable. When is the last time anyone left their kid in a kennel, or the backyard, to go to work or to get groceries?! Not the fucking same AT ALL.

    • Stacey Benson she isnt saying she doesnt love her pets. She is saying they are NOT THE SAME.

    • Sarah Christiane She is also implying that it is okay to throw your dog into the back of a truck and let it slam from side to side. The OP has a very valid point with this one that if you wouldn’t do it with your kid, don’t do it with your dog.
I still say if you can not (or WILL NOT) treat your animals like they are family, don’t get one.
I will not be responding to any more comments on this topic.

    • Stacey Benson you should be the OP lol! Please don’t tell me what to do! People used to have beautiful and well behaved dogs that they treated like family, and it happened that those dogs attacked those peoples human Babies! I know accidents happen but I would never choose my pet over my baby if something like this happen.

    • Mahassine Lamghari I have a 160 pound mastiff that I absolutely ADORE and he is the best behaved dog I’ve ever come across… . I also have a 7 year old son and a baby on the way, if my dog ever changed temperament and did anything to harm my children, I wouldnt be putting down my kids…… you can love your pets, but they are not the same as children. Ever. Period.

    • Human children are annoying. Dogs are awesome.
      Dogs>>>human kids

    • Sarah Christiane exactly! Last week there was a post about a lady obviously trying to find a new loved home for her dog that accidentally rushed into her baby, but almost everyone was blaming her using the famous” you have to love your dog the same way you love your child” and that was soo upsetting

    • Tracey Sharkie well you must be having annoying children as for me my kids are awesome!

    • Mahassine Lamghari botton line is that you cant treat kids like animals and cant treat animals like kids. I cant bring my mastiff to chucky cheese and I cant put my kid in a kennel for a day to go run errands.

    • Eymard Voughn Vergara I don’t, simply because I have two kids and having a pet will take much of my time that I’d rather give it to my kids!

    • Melissa Stratton Dear Melissa, what is a dog kennel, please explain???? and do they come with a king size bed, microwaved food, a big lake, free balls, kung fu fighting and huggles? (does not include the latest bungee ball cord I ordered “the Bo”!

    • Melissa Stratton I meant a metal cage in the house….

  28. Chelle Bee Chelle Bee says:

    Tell the air companies that
N if your pet is secure in the box of a truck your not doing anything illegal

  29. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. It is also against the law to use your phone when driving.

    • Tiara Preist Tiara Preist says:

that pic looks like was taken in a parking lot; but to be fair, who is to say the driver didn’t put the dog in the back while s/he was in a store so the dog wasn’t overheating in a hot car.

  30. Kevin Barry Kevin Barry says:

I always travel with my cat and dog in the back.

  31. Dana Horniak Dana Horniak says:

For those recommending people to “mind their own business”, having an unsecured load is everyone’s business….despite your inability to recognize that danger, or care about your living and breathing “cargo”.

  32. Mike Rubens Mike Rubens says:

Their website is trying to download crap onto machine…and with that, Unliked!

  33. Furthermore the Animal Protection Act of Alberta also applies in this situation and supersedes any local bylaw.

  34. Becki Pound Becki Pound says:

I would put my kids in the back, but apperantly its illegal! I transported a dog home wednesday and it was in the back of my truck, in a crate, with a strap running thru. Dont tell me my dog has to go in the cab too, with all the kids. And the schools like calling cfs cuz my kids always smell like wet farm dogs. Hahaha
    Not happening

  35. Yes, edmonton bylaw does cover having pets unsecured both in a vehicle and in the bed of a truck, regardless of canopy.
The amount of ignorance and outright irresponsibility by some of the mouth breathers in here is stunning.

  36. Wtf is wrong with people going against the OP. It’s against the law and that person shouldn’t own a dog

  37. Years ago I was driving on the highway. A guy was driving with his dog in the back of his truck. He was on a long leash attached to the truck. He hit a bump on the road and the dog flew out of the back and he didn’t notice. That poor dog was dragged on the highway and was being strangled as I watched in horror. I was beeping my horn as were others. He was driving at highway speeds. Worst thing I ever witnessed. By the time he pulled over the dog had died.
Put your dogs IN your vehicle or leave them home!!!

  38. I agree somewhat. Dogs are not cargo. But you saying you’d be more hurt if the dog was hurt more than a human being makes you cargo

  39. Clearly you people have never had a muddy st bernard .
    Or any large working breed
    That swims
Granted ive grown up in the country not barreling my dog down busy edmontonian hwys.

You bring me your car ill follow you to my home
And thank you for the help

    • Shayla McKenzie Tolliver I have 3 giant breeds, one is a St. Bernard who loves the mud lol
I keep blankets and towels to clean them up in my vehicle to transport them IN the vehicle.

    • Lisa Dattoli Hill well im sure your vehicle looks how mine use too

      which is a detailing nightmare.
Frankly, not looking to play whoses car is the nastiest
Like i said i live in the coutry have a cane corso
      St bernard
And a rottie and none of which will be inside my car after a swim .
      Thats just silly .
Some people use cages in the back
      Or have truck bed covers
As i stated earlier im not flying down the highway and yes my dogs have been transported inside my car but dogs have road on the backs of trucks for as long as weve had trucks sorry im not changing just because some moron is a horrid owner

    • Shayla McKenzie Tolliver I have a Jeep and I have a St. Bernard a Great Dane and a German Shepard/Great Pyrenees X and I live in the country too.
They still go in my vehicle and it’s not a huge mess because I keep everything covered well.
I’m not asking you to change, just saying it can be done

    • Lisa Dattoli Hill i had a jeep patriot got a truck with a bed cover for this exact reason .
Hair tornados drool on everything as clean as youd like to tell me it is ive lived it sorry

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Shayla McKenzie Tolliver That’s why they have dog covers for your vehicle genius

No need to be impolite to her though!

I have 3 large ones so prepare of some spillage.
      I can assure you
My this rubber mat to cover the slippery metal floor paired with a truck cap with windows
Oh lets not forget the fact that my pets are trained so jumping off the back is out of the question
… but please ill bust out my tiny violin since you think im a monster for taking my dogs to swim and play in mud .
I guess we should leave them home.(eye roll)

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

What I’m hearing is that you are not prepared to have dogs then

    • Noh Huan lol yah yah whatever like i said bring your car if you care i guess youll be popping over to drive us next time .

    • Noh Huan
Funny so what breed of dog do you have .
You seem like a cat person lol

    • Noh Huan ive had over 20 dogs in my life if youd like to start comparing dog knowldge ill happily oblige until then kindly get a life .
You just want someone to argue with and today im over this .

I doubt you could handle the breed let alone provide adequate care .
      dogs smell weakness

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Meh at least I have the sense enough that I would prep my car or just roll w the punches. Dirty vehicle is a fair trade for the safety of a family member. At least I have the sense to live within my means safely.
Honestly. That’s a piss poor excuse.

    • Leah Hickman i agreed already ! I also said i dont fly down the highway .
I even called that owner a moron .
Other commenters still take issue with everything

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Also you are a fucking weirdo for arguing this point. You have a cover sit back down.
      Fucking stupid people…

    • Noh Huan ok ill go get an 18 person van to appease an oaf.
Lets be clear youve never owned this breed so i could careless your opinion on his transport .
Yet again if youd like to drive him after a swim ill be sure to call you

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Lisa Dattoli Hill who are you my mom?

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Shayla McKenzie Tolliver I don’t have an issue with your method of transportation bc you have a cover. Tf is your problem? I don’t need to have a specific breed to know that transporting a dog as specified above is a piece of shit thing to do. Stfu.

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

If you have such a low regard that you think a dog is property you don’t deserve dogs.

    • Noh Huan lol im a weirdo for owning multiple dogs
Housing them correctly transporting them adequately and calling the other owner a moron for driving his dog abhorrently.
      Mhm…..
is my dog on the back of a truck, yup.
      Are you against that?
      Clearly.

So who is the real weirdo .
Maybe read before flipping out .
People who live in the country take their dogs in the bed of their trucks constantly all summer which is normal!

You took one case which is abuse and lost your damn mind .

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

And honestly if I had a dog after a swim in my car vs in the bed of an uncovered truck WOULD be what I do.

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Shayla McKenzie Tolliver omfg you’re so dumb. You make a post that’s misleading clear it up and when people say it’s different you keep picking fights. Can’t cure stupid I guess.

    • Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Bc I’m referring specifically to those cases. God thinking on’t a strong point of yours eh.
Just cuz multiple people do it doesn’t make it right.

  40. It’s highly illegal, and you should have got his licence and called police IMMEDIATELY!!

  41. The problem with transporting your dog this way is that when your dog gets hurt and it will at some point the vet bills will be a lot especially if it happens in off hours and you need the emergency vet care. Hope this does not ever happen to the dogs

  42. In some places its illegal. I’m not sure about Edmonton but you can call and ask police

    • Brenda Nelson Calgary has a bylaw they have to be in a truck with canopy and in a kennel!
Don’t know if Edmontons is in effect yet but they will fine them if caught with a loose dog.

    • Roxy Doc Roxy Doc says:

In Calgary the need to have a canopy, not fully illegal here, but I’d still check the see if the animal was content and safe before I called the police for animal welfare check.
Sadly animals are still property and people can be neglectful if they want to.

  43. I rode in the back of a truck. So stick your opinion up your ass

  44. AMEN OP. People are stupid. Dogs are too precious. they are our family and fur babies. If you wouldnt put your child in the box which is illegal do not put your dog in the box UNLESS dog is in a kennel that is safely strapped in. You idiots who tell them to myob GET BENT!!!!! You dont deserve the privilege of being the guardian of a dog or a cat for that matter.

  45. Noh Huan Noh Huan says:

Why have a dog if you’re gonna be a piece of crap human who doesn’t care if it lives or dies?

  46. Sam Douglas Sam Douglas says:

Takes a special kind of asshole to defend someone putting a dog, improperly secured in an open truck bed. Alberta’s Animal Protection Act states that animals must be contained in a compartment and protected from possible harm. The law also has rules around footing for animals and not being exposed to undue danger.

    • Sam Douglas thank you!

    • A dog could fly threw a winshield could slam into you while driving
Could become trapped in the car if you go into a lake .
Seems like albertans want to freak out over everything even when it doesnt really make sense .
Ever see a dog lay down in the back and chill
Or toy dogs on back patrolling their neighbourhood .
I i guess you’ve never given a drooling dog an ice cream cone

    • Sam Douglas Sam Douglas says:

Shayla McKenzie Tolliver What “doesn’t make sense” about being concerned for the safety of a dog that’s improperly secured in the back of an open pickup bed? The rest of your comment is too disjointed to decipher.

    • Thank you. I waa going to comment but seemed useless as everyone wants op to mind their own business. I have seen this to much in Edmonton and with all the bad drivers now we have to watch out for dogs who could be flying out of pick up trucks haha its sad that noone sees that as an issue but everyone wants op to look the other way. That how problems get bigger people look the other way

  47. You have the plate report it to bylaw they will be fined read the bylaws!

It’s unsafe for the dog as well as other’s should an accident occur!

They are allowed if in a kennel which is secured!

  48. Austin Weiss Austin Weiss says:

Whoever thinks having a dog in box without a canopy is retarded look up some videos on what can go wrong. Get into an accident and that dog is flying out and probably dead. Hell, you might as well add a leash so it can get choked out and dragged. smh

  49. This is one person’s point of view it is not against the law so mind your own damn business and I truly hope shut out Edmonton gets in s*** for posting somebody’s license plate when they’re trying to create a mob mentality to gain up on somebody who is not breaking the law

  50. Is it ok to be posting licence plate numbers here with every petty grievance? This sort of thing should get reported to the city not Shoutout Edmonton.

  51. I rode in the back of trucks all the time growing up.. mind your business and don’t tell me how to raise my kids or transport my Animals
