Dear Rachel Notley

Dear Rachel Notley….what a waste of taxpayers money. My 92 year old mother had one of the government paid, eco thermostats put into her house 2 weeks ago and after a very stressful 2 weeks with the furnace not cutting in or not turning off, had it removed tonight and her old one put back in.

Even the technician that was contracted by the Alberta Government to install these said there are huge issues and they don’t work properly with older furnaces. If you have a 3 wire connection they work okay….2 wire connection and there are problems. This wasn’t discussed at all during installation, or even after numerous calls to “tech support”.

$250.00 each for these units, and people are removing them and selling them on the buy & sells……taxpayers money hard at work!!

In the mean time, my mother was sitting in her chair covered in blankets because the furnace was not kicking in…..or almost in tears because it wouldn’t shut off and it was ridiculously hot in the house. You will be receiving a letter in the next couple of days expressing my disgust with this absolute waste of money!!

  2. Why would you let you mom freeze or be very hot? Why not take her to your place for 2 weeks?

  3. Like. I’m not a huge fan of hers these days but how is the installation not being done correctly her fault?

  4. Yes…blame the government and not the installer.

    • The installers are just doing what they were contracted to do…this is available to all Albertans, but it was not researched properly to make sure that it would benefit all Albertans

And why be anonymous? Stand up be counted and grow some balls or maybe you voted for her and you don’t want your country club friends finding out that you bought into this bullshit program in the first place

  6. This is free service. They come in and change your light bulbs put different shower heads on for efficiency they installer on mine explained about the thermostat and he did tell me that they don’t always work with the system I have so I declined it. Really it is good if you don’t want to go out and buy new light bulbs.

  7. She didn’t have the right furnace. The installer did it anyhow…he also got paid for that. Why are you complaining about Notley? Complain about the person who knowingly installed something they knew wasn’t going to work, and ripped off taxpayers by taking the money for the job.

    • They are doing the job that the government has hired them to do….it isn’t there job to check each house for compatability…the government didn’t look into these thermostats thoroughly….they could have just provided ordinary programmable thermostats for under $100 …. did have to be “smart” technology

    • Janet Forchuk the idea that we can’t change with the times…sigh. At any rate, I think the installer WAS responsible for advising the customer that the system wasn’t appropriate for her home. I know many people with smart thermostats, that have zero issues with them. Saves money on heating in the long run, too.

So you are removing a government paid item, selling it on buy and sell, and you think Rachel Notley is wasting taxpayers money? Also if the government technician was experienced enough to explain why it was malfunctioning, the installing technician was clearly the issue. Or a lack of research on your part.

Actually now that I read it again it makes even less sense. The government contracted technician that installed it said there were tons of issues but the issues were never discussed during installation? Huh? I’m still not fathoming how this connects as Rachel Notleys fault. We can’t blame other people for everything.

Don’t get me wrong I’m sad an elderly person experienced this I guess I just don’t understand the program

Because the government contracts these guys. They take responsibility for the work. When a plumber breaks your toilet, do you report to him directly, or do you call his boss?

That’s why it’s a government problem. They don’t vet the contractors, because the government staff don’t give a shit. Can’t get fired from a government job.

She’s blaming Notley because the item is promoted and paid for by the government. So the tax payers paid for this item and to have it installed, even though it doesn’t work in a large majority of homes, and even though the technicians know it will cause problems. I think that’s the issue.

You can buy an energy saving thermostat of your choice and get a $100 rebate. That’s not the Premiers fault, seriously flawed logic.

  18. It is the NDP’s program and wasn’t thoroughly investigated before they initiated it.

  19. No one made you/her get the upgrades, they are not required and the installers only job is to install. You want it done right pay for a contractor that’s qualified.

  20. Shouldn’t you be whining like a bitch to Ecofitt, the actual provider for the program?

    [0]
  21. So your whining the government gave free thermostats and free install
    And is not working 100%
Some people are still using wood burning stoves to keep warm

  25. Absolutely it’s Notley , it’s the ndp that is pushing this program part of going green but the program has serious flaws which cause expensive fixes by the person thus Yes it is totally Notley and her ndp cronies

  26. Thanks for posting this info. I am not in support of the government blasting but I am in line for one of those new “smart” thermostats and have an old furnace. I may have to let my landlord to cancel it… I have been waiting for them to install it since end of January tho…

Everybody is completely missing the point he’s complaining that the government wasted money on this Ridiculously costly program.why would you initiate a program that uses incredibly costly thermostats that don’t work with every furnace only the new ones. how many properties around Alberta have older furnaces, Is bet quite a few. it’s just a program that wasn’t thought through properly just like every single other government program.
