Do Your Research

Please be careful and do your research when buying or adopting a pet. When you see people on buy and sells selling “purebred” puppies for $2000, you don’t know what you’re getting.

Just because mom and dad are healthy, doesn’t mean your new pet is guaranteed to be healthy. This is nothing more than someone who got 2 “purebred” digs off kijiji and bred them together. If you’re going to spend a bunch of money, find a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder does genetic testing and knows exactly what kind of lines it comes from.

Good breeders BETTER the breed. They do not breed for money. If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t keep your dog, they will take it back. They will have spay/neuter contracts and much more.

On the flip side, if you don’t really care about genetics, health guarantees or how purebred your dog is, adopt one! There are countless rescues out there that adopt out dogs for less and some fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered.

Shelters are busier than ever because of irresponsible breeding, so please don’t be part of the problem.

  1. The last pet I got I noticed someone left their dog in the car during the hot summer day. So I broke into the car and took the dog. I also got two loonies and a Celine Dion CD from the console.

  2. Also they want deposits, do they seriously want someone to hand over half the price to someone they don’t know. Your not a breeder just because your dog had puppies. Oh and another thing that pisses me off a bull mastiff is not a pure bred dog. Two different breeds bred together is a mutt not a designer dog.

  3. Reputable breeders also don’t sell puppies on kijiji, because they only have a litter when they’ve already got enough people lined up to purchase the puppies of that litter.

Kijiji can be a good place to find a pet if it’s someone rehoming an animal, or an unfortunate oopsie litter (which is hopefully followed up with a trip to the vet to get fixed.) But no one should be spending $2000 on a dog from there; all that does is support these backyard breeder type people.

    • Backyard breeders! It’s a word we need to use more often!

Some good breeders do advertise on kijiji but people really need to do their research first especially on the breed. And really theres no “oopsie” litter if your dog or cat isnt fixed its just a matter of time before they get pregnant. If you have a male and female who are both unfixed and still call it an “oopsies litter” then please google the birds and the bees story lol.

  4. Reputable breeders do not breed until they have buyers who want pups. They don’t breed on spec – they offer lifetime genetic health guarantees and will take a dog back at any time if the owner cannot keep it. The term “Purebred” does not mean quality – it just means the dog is registered and the parents are known.

  5. Better yet, adopt. Dozens of rescue agencies out there, charging $350 for a dog that is just as good as the one you’re paying $2000 for with a fancy name.

  6. Or adopt and don’t add to the problem of abandoned domesticated animals.

  10. If you’re going to spend $2000 on any pet…get insurance. I know someone who did all her research. Saw reviews etc. Everything seemed in order. Registered breeder. Turned cat had a fatal disease that came from within the cattery. The breeder has since shut down.

Or rescue and animal so you know you made a difference. There are a lot of dogs who have to be put down because they do not have owners yet so many people want to go out and buy a dog because they want it a certain pure breed or some crap. There’s nothing better then saving an animal. My girlfriend rescued this pitty after she was used as a bait dog in dog fighting rings. I love her and she’s a great dog who only wants to be loved.

    • Where was she rescued from if you don’t mind me asking?

This baby ended up at the Humane Society, she was due to be euthanized because she was extremely aggressive. Never met a more loving, snugly, needs to be close type of dog.

If I’m correct she was rescued in the states where my girlfriend was volunteering for the pitbull and parolees thingy (she’s hasn’t ever been to jail just likes pitties)

Not only watch out for puppies but for kittens too. I have seen a ton of fluffy kittens be called main coons, tabby kittens as bengals, grey kittens as Russian blues or mixed with the breed and there is zero chance they are. People like to google what their kittens might be just to jack up the price which is wrong. Even if they are indeed mixed with a certain breed paying $500+ for an unfixed mixed kitten is wrong. Research any breed before getting the breed so you know characteristics, and breed description and never ever pay before meeting the kittens/parents!!

  17. Research the rescue too. There are those out there cashing in on the adopt don’t shop marketing. #educateandinvestigate

  18. Please never buy from a pet shop. Those are always always always from puppy mills. Puppies look so cute but the parents live there whole life in small crates please adopt from shelters or find a reputral breeder. Tour the grounds meet the bitch and sire of the puppies. Background info on the lines of the dogs. Educate yourself first red flags to watch for puppy mill bastards are the shop does not disclose who the breeder is. Can’t get background info on the adults
