Driving with Only a Learners

So my friend just informed me that someone she knows is driving around with just her learners and that’s not even the worst part she has been known to drive around with kids including the drivers own child in the vehicle

Who would me or my friend call to report this my friend sent me 2 pictures one of the license plate and one of the driver sitting in her car outside of dockside pub downtown.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Call 780-423-4567 or #377 – it’s police dispatch for non emergencies. They will ask you to provide as much info as possible about the person and the vehicle (s) they are driving. Good Luck and thanks for dealing with this. There are enough licensed driver’s in the city who don’t drive safely. If she isn’t licensed she also can’t be insured.

    • You can be insured and registered with only learners…. fyi

You can own and insure a car without even having a license.

It’s the registration that needs license.

      [1]
    • you can insure a vehicle with a learners license

      [1]
    • Brad Bazinet okay so this makes sense- if you have NO license how can you register a car. You need registration And a license to drive. this post angers me because this is why there so many people are getting insurance rates jacked up. You legally need a: 1. License 2. Insurance and 3. registration. ITS THE LAW. not one or the other.

      [1]
    • You can insure and register your vehicle with only learners You need someone with drivers that will be a secondary driver for your insurance only!

      [1]
    • You can get limited inaurance yes, but if the client is fraudulent and gets into an accident, the insurance company may not pay for it. It’s an unecessary risk and illegal.

      [0]
    • I was able to buy, register and insure a vehicle with only a class 7 (learners license). This way I was able to take a class 5 licensed driver in my vehicle for the 1 year probation period before I was able to get my full class 5 license. I had full coverage, fire, theft, and comprehensive collision.

Angela Bruno Bordignon, good thing you can read. Try it again. Reading glasses are at the drug store.

I said registration NEEDS a current license.

I commented because the commenter I replied to said “If she isn’t licensed she also can’t be insured”. To which I said you can own and insure a car WITHOUT a license.

Not like I condone illegal driving. My last car was hit and run totalled by an uninsured, unregistered transient low life waste of skin and my oxygen.

      [0]
    • Brittany Davies and everyone else. when you get that insurance it is with the understanding that you will follow the law and not drive alone with only a learners licence. The second that you break the law, you are no longer insured because you are fraudulent

  2. So you can’t drive with a GDL ?

    [0]
    • You can drive with a class 7 but you have to have a occupant in the vehicle with a class 5 or higher.

      [1]
    • You can’t drive with a Learner’s Permit (Class 7) but you can drive with a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL – Class 5). The GDL has restrictions like zero tolerance for alcohol and the demerits are higher.

      [0]
    • Kody Shwaga Kody Shwaga says:

I think a GDL restricts you from driving with people under 18 in the vehicle too but I could be mistaken.

    • Sacha Pape Sacha Pape says:

Gdl means no more seatbelts than people and no driving between midnight and 5or 6 am. Double demerits for tickets. I drove with my son all the time on my gdl and was only on trouble for speeding when I got pulled over (double demerits boo)

      [0]
    • Sasha GDL drivers have half the demerit points, only 8 compared to 15 of a full license… I don’t think you lose more when getting a ticket, you just don’t have as many to start with. I’ve been a GDL driver for 11 years… Lol

      [0]
    • Kody Shwaga I think you can drive with kids just not after certain hours and cand teach others to drive.

  3. What a huge invasion of privacy posting the license plate! Call the police non emergency line if you feel the need.

  7. My ex drives with a suspended licence with my kids and the police just say.. We can’t do anything till we pull him over

    [0]
  8. Wow. One thing to ask a question, but you just sent plates to a public medium. If you’re wrong, I hope you get nailed with slander!

    [0]
  9. you can contact the police but they can’t really do anything until they pull her over.

    [0]
  10. She is doing something wrong but give her the benefit of the doubt. Getting your license is not cheap and if she has kids and she is on her own she may not be able to afford it. Its a damn shame but what if you called her in for going grocery shopping and she got a fine for driving without a license which can be up to $2000. I am ABSOLUTELY not condoning driving without a license but confronting her and having her realize (and get her license) without you calling it in and her being fined is a better way to go in my opinion. Just tell her you have photos and intend to send them in but wanted to give her time to take her licensing test. Hey, maybe shes just an asshole that doesnt care to get a license but give her the benefit of the doubt.

    [0]
    • The law is the law. She’s an unlicensed driver knowingly breaking the law.

      [0]
    • But I will capitulate that the biggest wrong here is OP posting the license plate pic online.

      [0]
    • It’s actually 2500 in Alberta. How doni know… well I was stupid. Did the same thing not once but twice ended up will 5600.00 in fines and out of that i got 636 community service hour or jail time. I’d have a good talk with her. People think this won’t happen to them but it will

      [0]
    • It’s not expensive to get your license! It’s getting the vehicle and insurance that’s expensive and she clearly has the vehicle already. So all she has to do is go take exam and road test. It will end up way more costly if she gets caught.

      [0]
    • I don’t want to be an asshole- BUT she isn’t insured so what if she hits someone or kills someone. Call on her. NOW This is not okay. For the person who said its expensive- um its less than $100 and the fines will be more than that. Try getting insurance after being jailed and it showing up on your abstract. This is the stupidest thing- report it to the police. If she can’t afford to drive or get her drivers then she shouldne be driving its called ETS. get a bus pass then

      [0]
    • If it’s too expensive to get her license then perhaps she should be walking or taking the bus. I do not think she should get the benefit of the doubt lol

      [0]
    • Angela Bruno Bordignon how do you know she isn’t insured? you can insure and register a vehicle with just a learners.

      [0]
    • You can insure your property, yes. But it still goes against your policy to drive alone on a learner’s permit. Any accident comes out of the offender’s pocket. It will ruin a person financially.

      [0]
    • Scott Gill Scott Gill says:

Would you let some dude who claims to be an obgyn who just can’t afford to get his licence give you an exam?

Hey, why not give him the benefit of the doubt?

      [0]
    • Candice Ball Candice Ball says:

You can get insurance with your learners. Same with registation.

      [0]
    • Getting your license isn’t cheap?! Then she shouldn’t be driving if she can’t afford one especially if she has kids. Secondly, she’s driving on the streets that me AND MY KIDS are on. If she hasn’t passed and received her drivers, I consider that unsafe. She’s also being unlawful. There are plenty of people who take city transit, guess she can too if she can’t afford the luxury! It’s a privilege to drive not a right!

      [0]
    • Agreed, but assholes love an excuse to be assholes…. The OP isn’t trying to help, she’s just being a cow. Go volunteer somewhere. I’m sure someone needs help, I’m also sure the OP wouldn’t do it.

  11. Informing the police is fine, but I don’t think we should we posting photos of license plates.

  12. You are a terrible person OP.

  13. I would wind my neck back in and mind my own business. Enough shit happening in the world and you’re consumed with what your friends friend is doing!

  14. Instead of shaming her online, maybe you could stop being passive aggressive behind her back and actually have a conversation with her to her face.

  17. So maybe confront
    The person.
if finances are an issue why not help her out and pay for her testing to get done! Instead of stirring the pot and being busy bodies do a positive thing and pay for it or perhaps support her by driving her around…. When you make it YOUR business then make sure you can positively follow through ….
Otherwise sit in the corner and mind your business

  18. I hate it when social media is used this way.

    [0]
  19. Ya she’s breaking the law but people need to just mind their own business who has time in their day to write and post and go all out ? Jesus

  20. Let’s hear from someone who drove without a proper D/L, got into an accident where someone was injured, and said offender had to repay every cent of the property damage and for the injury. Or, how about YOU get hit and injured by this person. That’s a joyful experience and I guarantee you won’t be mad. This behavior puts everyone at risk. Anyone who drives without a D/L or insurance are asshats.

  24. A lot of people do this and many of them are safe and competent drivers. Not having any insurance is much worse as if they were to cause injury or damage to someone else there would be no coverage. You are allowed to drive with your own children in the car with a GDL.and after a couple years almost all the restrictions are lifted. The GDL was designed to prevent accidents in teenage drivers. Also I think you should seriously consider minding your own business…it is VERY likely this person doesn’t have the money to pay to take the test or cab around with her kid. You calling the police on her is very cruel . If she is a terrible driver than maybe go ahead.

    [0]
  25. Call the police. If she is not drinking call non emergency. If she is drinking call 911.

True but how many posts on this site have been about TERRIBLE drivers/ accidents? A lot in the last little while. If all those terrible drivers are the unlicensed……maybe these people should be reporting…..

  31. …to the cops. not shoutout Edmonton.

    [0]
  32. I highly doubt they are all unlicensed. you’d be surprised how many licensed drivers are shitty drivers. this matter should have been dealt with privately between them.

More helpful in this situation considering she has kids is to offer to teach her to drive leave the police out of it and stop posting the licence plate which I’m sure is illegal to do.

  41. Candice Ball Candice Ball says:

I think it’s pretty harsh to post this. When I only had my learner I failed my first drivers test. So j waited for a while and took drivers training and practised a lot. When I went back to take the test my horn stopped working on the way there. They automatically failed me because of that and wouldn’t let me take the test and no refund. I was so angry I didn’t go back for like 6 months and just drove with my learners. I was more than ready. And anyways when you get caught it’s just a 270$ ticket. As long as you have insurance and registration it’s actually not a big deal.

    [0]
  42. Nothing can be done with the plate number. Tbink about it thousands of people a day see your plate. So puting it on the internet is not much diffrent

    [0]
  43. Gee, good thing we have you to protect us. Smh. The food bank always needs volunteers…

    [0]
  44. Get your friend to talk to her, explain that it both illegal and morally wrong to drive with a learners….not to mention the lack of experience on the road. Make a point to say that she is endangering her children, herself and the public by not being responsible and taking the proper steps to get her licence. If after your friend chats with her and she still drives then report her.

    [0]
    • Why is it her job to explain the law to someone. I’m sure the person knows they can’t drive with a learners alone. That’s part of the material you are required to read to pass your learners test. So if she chooses to knowingly break the law while endangering her children she deserves whatever comes her way.

      [0]
    • i’m sure she knows the law

    • Amanda Jones Amanda Jones says:

If she isn’t old enough to understand the consequences, she isn’t old enough to drive!

      [0]
    • The consequences aren’t that bad when pulled over. My ride to work for over a year both only had learners. She even had a lady kit her while driving by herself with her learners and she didn’t even get a slap.

      [0]
    • Hey, maybe she isnt actually endangering anyone and is a good driver BUT she should still have a license. I agree, give her time to get a license before you go reporting her to the police

      [0]
    • The friend may know the law but probably doesn’t understand the consequences of it.
