Edmonton City Police

Today as I sat waiting for my daughter to finish work with my other two smaller children in the car with me. I saw something a little uneasy. I saw a police officer searching a handcuffed male in the age range from about 16-20. in a red Hoodie black or blue sweat pants. I can only assume he got caught stealing. he wasn’t resisting or giving them any sort of trouble simply just standing there. There were two police officers, one all of a sudden became so enraged over nothing as I had been watching as were my children.

In my opinion the officer in question abused his power he shoved this male suspect into he’s cruiser where he slightly hit his head while being shoved into the car. then the police officer slams the car door and walks toward his parent at the back and laughs. a few seconds later the same police offer reopens the car door and again looses his cool on the male suspect for no reason that I could tell or see yelling and reaching in for lord only knows what reason.

I was pretty close but it was dark and I don’t think the police realized I had been watching the whole time…..the safest thing is my youngest turned and said to me….mommy why is that police officer being so mean to that boy, I thought police officers were suppose to help people not hurt them, with such a sad face we left I had no words to describe this event…. I hope the male taken into custody is ok regardless of his mistake we are all human beings! Great job Whyte Ave police way to show our young children of today why they should not trust you. You should be ashamed of yourself.

    • Charlene Ghostkeeper why are you judging and assuming iv seen this happen so many times its disgusting you should be ashamed of yourself sticking up for a bully cop with anger management issues. You have no idea what happened either but you sure like to judge other don’t you .

    • Vanna Brule I was just about to write a similar post!! As a soon to be physician, you are totally correct. People in the medical field do take a lot of crap at times and deal with situations that bring out all kinds of emotions. Believe me, that excuse does not fly should a negative patient outcome happen as a result. As a matter of fact, if a physician is a danger to the public for emotional/mental health reasons, the onus is on us to recognize it and step back to get well. Bottom line, if a cop cannot control his emotions he should not be trusted with a gun on the street.

I hate the argument that police deal with crap all day and therefore it’s excusable when they take their aggressions out on people.

Do you think that cops deal with more bs than say, social workers or ER nurses? And yet if either one of those professions garnered the reputation for physically abusing people, there would be an uproar. No-one would excuse away the actions of a social worker losing it and beating on someone who did nothing to warrant it.

The reality is that when you choose to enter into that type of profession you are meant to be held to a specific standard, regardless of the crap you deal with. It’s never an excuse.

    • Cops are the biggest gang in Edmonton. And they are allowed to carry guns. Never had respect for them and never will.

    • Maybe you shouldn’t put so much blind ignorant faith in today’s police force.

They are a violent gang of thugs

And they deal with crap all day yes you’re correct but that’s the field they’ve Chosen. So know matter what kind of day they’ve had they do not get to mistreat or abuse their power. If your see something like this report it otherwise nothing will ever change. Police most certainly at times abuse their power.

Melissa L. Colbourne put yourself in that child’s position I bet you would be crying police assault if that were you! He was clearly not resisting therefore those ‘police’ had no right using force. Even this ladies own children recognized what they saw was bad HUMAN BEHAVIOR! And if the ‘kid had something’ that’s the cops fault for not properly securing the youth prior to throwing him in the cruiser. For you to tell her to ‘get over yourself’ your just as ignorant as the cops! Regardless of the young man’s situation those cops inflicted fear, hate along with committing assault on a detained person her children were TRAUMATIZED witnessing the entire event!! Now that is NOT CANADIAN!!

Fucktards… Fucktards everywhere. Simple fact of the matter if all you can say is your an idiot or bring out the race card then obviously you have bigger issues. Honestly no one knows the full story. No one knows what that officer has had to deal with. Remember they see shit that most will never see. If you feel he was aggressive or overstepped his bounds. By all means call for an investigation, report the officer. They’ll figure it out. I’ve learned one simple fact is there humans too. Obey the law and be polite to them and they treat you the same way.

    • Ben White I looked it up and to answer your question, 134,526 calls were made to the EPS last year (this year’s numbers aren’t in yet). So it would seem a lot of people call 911, myself included. I’d sooner call the police rather than my friendly neighborhood crackhead.
Justin Hopwood I agree that police should act professionally. What I am saying is that she doesn’t know all of the details, he could have been trying to hurt himself, tried to slip his hands to his front, tried kicking the window on the other side, who knows! When he hit his head who’s to say it was the police officers fault, I’ve hit my own head getting into my car before, it happens. As for the yelling, I’ve seen parents verbally abuse their children in public and no one bats an eye. Perhaps the officer said something that may register with the guy and send him on a different path in life.
If someone can’t handle the consequences of being a criminal then they shouldn’t do illegal things, pretty simple concept.

      [-1]
  5. as a criminology student i can 100% confirm that what you saw was probably police brutality and nothing will ever come of it.

    [3]
  6. It used to be that only the odd police officer had a small penis. It seems that now a days having a very tiny penis is a job prerequisite for the EPS.

So what? Your implying because they carry a badge it gives them the right to to treat people like shit? They get all that training to “serve and protect” there’s better ways to deal with ppl…

      [-2]

      [-2]
  8. Wouldn’t be the first or the last time they abuse their power. There will always be the few idiots, no matter how much videos or evidence shows someone being abused by police, they will make excuse after excuse for them. They should be made to take extreme mental tests before being given a badge. Can’t handle it? Then you shouldn’t be a police officer. Being “mouthy” doesn’t warrant police abuse either. Good grief.

    [2]
  9. Believe it or not, this type of stuff happens ALL THE TIME by eps. Luckily you were able to witness it first hand

    [1]
  10. Exactly “we are all human beings”. Ppl make mistakes. Cops should know better……unfortunately some do abuse their power. It’s a sad truth.

    [2]
    • Melissa Lee Melissa Lee says:

Sure. People make mistakes all the time. But you have no idea what “mistake” the person being arrested had made. They could have robbed someone, had multiple warrants for violent offences, had weapons, etc, etc. Just because they were being compliant at the time OP saw them means nothing. And yes I realize that police brutality does exist. Doesn’t necessarily mean this was one of those times.

      [-1]
  11. Stop breaking the fucking law and you would have no dealings with the police. As far as I’m concerned; if you break the law you deserve everything you get. Stop complaining about how you were treated unfairly or were roughed up.

Coming from a true criminal eh?… You you’re pathetic. Cops are not above the law. They are supposed to uphold it. They are suppose to be bound by the same laws that we are.

I hope the next time you get caught speeding, get a parking ticket. You get pulled out of your car and beat, and the whole time that you are doing what you’re told, they keep doing it. Because that’s what is really happening.

    • Shawn Wright Shawn Wright says:

So, if you ever got caught speeding, according to your theory. You deserve to be beaten, and injured and treated like shit. Possibly broken bones, or death.

      [0]
    • Sounds like it’s coming from a true criminal. Don’t break the law, comply, don’t resist arrest. I’m not sure how hard that is to comprehend. If you want to break the law, resist and not comply with any demands you deserve everything you get. To later whine in the media reports that you were roughed up because you did none of those things, look for sympathy elsewhere.

We also don’t know what happened here. Possibly a theft. But how do you know someone wasn’t assaulted and robbed? How do you know he wasn’t armed or broke into someone’s home to obtain those goods? How do you know he didn’t pull a weapon on a store clerk? It’s never anyone else’s issue unless it comes to their family. Criminals and their families complain about police treatment all the time with not a word spoken about the victim.

  12. Are you a police officer and know what police go through everyday? Do you know the entire situation including what the original call came in as? No?
    Then shut the fuck up

    [1]
  13. YOU are the problem. How dare you post this! You have NO idea what was going on. NONE! And we wonder why police have such a hard time. It’s people like you. I have NO doubt that if your child did something bad enough to be arrested YOU would be that parent that bails them out and tells them they did nothing wrong and the police should go F%€£ themselves. Wow. You disgust me.

    [1]
  14. Do something wrong, face cops. Don’t do anything wrong, you don’t have to worry. This world is pretty black and white.
Your car has tinted windows, it’s illegal (bs I know because I already got pulled over for mine) you’re going to deal with a cop. If your car doesn’t have tinted windows and everything about it is legal, you’re not going to deal with a cop…
break the law… deal with cops.
Don’t break the law… don’t deal with cops.
Mind your own business and stop needing to prod your nose into everything that doesn’t directly effect you.
    Simple.

Stupid post, stupid comments, quit speculating, unless you know, shut your mouth!

    [1]
  16. oh lord… seriously I stopped making comments because everyone seems to get so bloody offended…. and yet ive seen nothing but whiney morons every since.

Its not me, its you. Grow a brain. If he’s getting arrested he deserves whatever hes getting and frankly IF there was something going on, for the small percentage of “bad cops” out there, shaming and slandering the entire force is deplorable.

Take the car number, go ask for his badge number, and then report the ONE cop. Don’t start shit for all of them.

    [1]
  17. So you post something when you don’t actually know what was going on? You assume he was stealing. How do you know he didn’t do something worse? How do you know what he was saying to get himself in trouble or piss off the cops? IF that happened.
How do you not know it’s standard protocol to search someone when being arrested? Someone could have say oh, I don’t know. An open knife, or a needle that could also hurt the one being arrested. Then watch you scream they weren’t searched and got hurt. Hate to burst your bubble but People are Not walked over to a spot you might not see them to be arrested. Then you’d say they are shady cops if they had to hide to do it. If you don’t want to get in trouble, then stay out of it! Pretty simple! How do you know they slightly hit his head?? It was dark, right? Were you at the correct angle to see his head connected with the car, or are you assuming that too? Know your facts and stoping assuming before you post something so stupid. Smh!!

  39. Ma Simm Ma Simm says:

I am not defending some cops. Theres no excuse for brutality. But you don’t know the whole story.

You “assume” the kid was caught stealing. How do you know what he was up to? He could be a gun packing, drug dealing, B&E little pos for all you know. These lil criminal b@stards are tough as nails and they don’t give a $hit about how their crimes hurt anyone else.

You’re also making assumptions about the cops. Who knows what the real story is.

Being a cop these days is a stinkin’ thankless job. Morale is down. Crime is up. The justice system is lieniant . Gangsters and criminals are arrested and they’re released the next day for the cops to deal with again.

We got to know a cop over the course of a few years. Very nice guy and an great cop.

He said he quite often had to patrol on his own in some pretty rough areas.

He’d been spit in the face when trying to arrest a criminal. Some of these criminals have AIDS, HEP etc. The cop has to get tested repeadly for 6 months to ensure he doesn’t take this disease home to his loved ones.

This cop said he went to a rough area to service an arrest warrant again alone. He was confronted by a group who threated to kill him if he tried to take their criminal friend away. He said that was the one and only time he’d ever pulled his gun out.

You don’t like the cops? I hope you or your family never become victims of crime. If you do….. phone a drug dealer to respond to your call instead. People seem to hate cops…. until they need them.

  41. You should find out who was being arrested at that location and time of day and file a complaint. Perhaps the lawyer for the guy could utilize your statement for court. I have seen people in the wrong place at the wrong time getting arrested and assaulted for NO reason. I am so sick and tired of having police essentially abuse their power…. no reason why an officer should be man handling someone if the are complying….

If you were so taken back by what was going on why don’t you call the police and make a complaint? Try to find out what was going on. [0]
  44. Shut up and go be a cop for a few days!!!
    Parents nowadays!!!
Simply tell your kid: don’t be stupid! Don’t break the laws of this land! Innocent people don’t get thrown into police cars!!!

    [0]
  45. Instead of bitching on here. Write a letter to police chief. I’m sure if he gets enough people bitching about watching something like that. Then maybe he will do something. But if you were that concerned why didn’t you say anything????? You sure have alot to say on here!!!!!!!!!!!

    [0]
  46. Since when has it become acceptable to defend the criminals? Good on the cop. Maybe if the criminals realize it’s not fun and games to go to jail they would stop breaking the damn laws. Shoplifting, fighting, drugs, gangs, threatening others all seem to get praised anymore. This is why society is going to hell. Do the crime pay the price. I know when I was a teenager we tried not to get on the bad side of the cops because if our parents didn’t smack our ass the cops sure as hell would. Look at the current crime rate. Ever think it would be different if people were actually punished for doing this crap?

    [0]
  47. I hope you got their patrol car #. Report this incident to the main office anyway. Cops do protect their own but you never know, a miracle might happen and that dirty cop will get penalized for his bad behavior.

    [0]
  48. There are bad apples out there for sure. Cops who abuse their power because it boosts their ego. And other people out there should remember that our justice system assumes “innocent until proven guilty”. Any one of us could be apprehended by police wrongfully – simply being approached, searched or pulled over by an officer does not give them the right to physically harm us, no matter how “slight” a bump on the head!! I am sorry that your little boy has been given such a bad impression by our officers. These types of stories should go out to the media or to the EPS to remind officers that their actions are subject to public scrutiny.

  50. I actually witnessed something like this a little while ago and was a witness for the kid and his family.. the kid got 12 stitches in his head because the cop was having a bad day..

  54. Assume the best of everyone unless you have valid information to make other conclusions. You have no idea of the context of this situation and you have no idea what was being said by ‘the sweet boy’ being arrested.

  57. I agree with some of the previous comments. Unless you know the whole story, do not assume. Police officers do not just pick random people to give a hard time to. If the the handcuffed male had not committed a crime, this would not even be up for discussion.

  58. Jena Sandra Jena Sandra says:

I’m not quite getting it. The cop pushed the 16-20 year old into the back of the car and yelled at him? I’m not sure how else this should have unfolded? The cop politely asking him to take a nice little break in the back seat? Have a little heart to heart? “Why is the cop being so mean?” If the guy was handcuffed my assumption can only be that he was suspected of breaking the law!!! “I thought police officers were supposed to help people” Maybe this guy was trolling playgrounds or had multiple warrants or was a violent offender. I’m sorry I’m SOOOOO sick of people making assumptions because thier sheltered reality was changed. You saw a police officer doing his job. And it’s not your place to expect it to be justified. That’s what is turning this world into a dangerous place because no wants to hurts someone else’s feelings.

  60. Maybe it was a case like my situation. My son was going down a very bad road. He was wearing gang colors. Smoking weed. Very disappointed respectfully at age 16 and 17. I contacted my local police station as my son was suspended from school from stealing a knife. The police officer was great. Gave my son the reality of a criminal. Long story short. My son is a amazing 13yr old man. Works full-time. Comes home every night. Hangs with good kids. Never judge until you know the full story.

    [0]
    • Those bastards ! How dare they take a group photo with little children AND letting them sit in the front seat ?

      [0]
    • The parents just asked if an EPS officer could come over because their son wants to grow up and become one, they gave the boy an experience he would never forget. Police all over the city, province and country do this every day, it just doesn’t involve a headline catching title so it rarely comes to light.

It’s uphold the law.. By any means necessary

  83. I don’t understand why so many people are saying stuff like “but you don’t know what he might of done! He could be a violent person!” Or “well he shouldn’t have broken the law”…. what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? It really doesn’t matter what a person is ACCUSED of doing, as long as said person is being respectful and following orders the police should do the same. I’ve never been arrested but I’ve had a few run ins with cops and can say that a few of them (especially RCMP) have been unbelievably rude and disrespectful towards me for absolutely no reason when I was cooperating, answering their questions and speaking to them in a very respectful manner. I even had an RCMP officer tell me that “he’s a cop and he can do whatever he wants”…. at the end of the day cops are people too, and a lot of people are easily corrupted by that level of power, then again a lot of them aren’t. You can’t lump all of them into one group. There’s good ones and bad ones.

Typical pigs, this happens daily. Eps are as cowardly and crooked as they come. I’ve learned first hand as a child when they swore at me and pushed me around and told me they are taking my parents to jail just because I was at a convenience store buying a bag of chips at lunch time and I looked too young. Ever since then my attitude has been fuck the police and the garbage they stand for.

    • Sean Foster Sean Foster says:

From my personal experience and what I see weekly I have to disagree, respectfully. I’ve spent 10’s of thousands of dollars getting out of criminal charges layed against me on bogus claims by police who were PAYED under the table to charge me with aggravated assault with prohibited weapons against a person I have never met in person but who was trying to do business with me which I wanted no part of. That was a long sentence. But regardless when a pig takes a bribe from a family member to black mail me into settling out of court so he can start his own business by my dime and to guarantee me acquittal of the bogus charges, what is that except disgustingly un just. And don’t say this never happened cause I lived it for 2 years

Everyone should Not trust police. I suppose they r not wearing a camera. I was abused 3 times by police n nothing was done. Not one lawyer to help me unless I had $3000 down. Legal aid refused me. I walk with walker n cuz I was drunk they took my walker away and handcuffed they dragged me about two blocks. Be put in jail overbite just to b released. Had cousin Ray take pictures of my briuses n scratches showing I was dragged. Gave pixs to son also
Becuz of that my arms at elbows lots of pain n sometimes just slip out n can’t hold anything for while.

My son a severe hemophiliac was with his friend in a car when stopped. He was actually being dragged out of car while still in his seatbelt. He was just released from hospital n this action by Edmonton City Police put him back in University hospital for another ten days. U people b4 trying to call people liars, u should believe what price day about police. Everyone should capture things on camera n put on Facebook or YouTube. This doesn’t only happen in the States. It happens here too.

  89. Cops are goofs simple as that

    [0]
  90. You don’t know what this kid did…. what he had on his person… just because he was searched doesn’t mean he didn’t have anything hidden… so before you condemn our police and what they are doing maybe you should ask yourself if you truly know what the facts are…. stop shaming the police when you don’t know what the facts are….

    [0]
  91. I regret wasting my time to read this post..

    [0]
  92. So you post something when you don’t actually know what was going on? You assume he was stealing. How do you know he didn’t do something worse? How do you know what him or his parents were saying?
Are you really that oblivious to not know it’s standard protocol to search someone when being arrested. You don’t realize the cops aren’t that stupid to not search someone and put them in the back seat with who knows what in their pockets. Just because they are in cuffs doesn’t mean they can’t grab something from say back pocket. I hate to burst your bubble but People are Not taken walked over to a spot you might not see them. If you don’t want to get in trouble, then stay out of it!!! Pretty simple!!!
Know your facts and stoping assuming before you post something so stupid. Smh!!

  93. Melanie so you’ve never broken the law?? You ever speed?? Drink alcohol before your legal age etc my god!! You do realize you don’t even have to break a law to be harassed, they just need to suspect you…. that’s it!! You could fit the description of the actual criminal!! You’re what’s wrong in this world! Smdh!
