News: The Elephant & Castle Pub on Whyte Avenue is Shutting Down Forever, Exactly One Week From Today
The Elephant & Castle Pub on Whyte Avenue wrote in a Facebook post yesterday that it will be shutting its doors forever:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the end of an era. After decades of being a local staple in Old Strathcona, Elephant & Castle Whyte Ave will be closing its doors on December 21.”
They go on to say that they would like to see as many of you that have spent time there over the decades as possible this weekend:
“We would like to invite any, and all of you who have spent time in this great pub over the years to come down this week. We would love the opportunity to share stories over a drink with you.”
They finished off their post with a heartfelt thank you to the community of Old Strathcona:
“We would also like to send out a huge, heartfelt thank you to the community of Old Strathcona! There is no other place in the city that we’d rather be than on Whyte Avenue! We’re going to miss you!”
With 11 locations across North America, the Elephant & Castle Pub on Whyte Avenue is the only location in Edmonton, and with the last day of its existence being December 21st, the closest location thereafter will be in Vancouver, BC.
One of the location’s staff wrote on Facebook earlier today that they will be doing all in their power to allocate their current staff to other Franworks Group locations. Franworks Group of Companies is the parent company to Elephant & Castle pubs across the nation, as well as the parent company to Original Joe’s and State & Main.
The Facebook comment reads:
“This entire week is going to be spent finding homes for the staff somewhere within the Franworks Group of Companies. Anyone who decides not to stay will be taken care of. Nobody is going to be left out in the cold. I made that promise to them myself.”
Reasoning for the closure are not known at this time, but it is being said that people will be notified during the final week of its opening. All you have to do is ask one of the staff in person.
At this time it is unknown if any of the items from within will be sold or auctioned off.
FranWorks Group states that they may be maintaining ownership of the location and re-branding it in 2016.
Really sucks to see them go!
