Found someone’s Dead Black Cat 105 26ave

Very sorry for your loss..
Found at 105 st 26 ave (November 13th). Biggish black cat on the street with a short stub for a tail. No collar.

It was hit by a car probably shortly before we drove by it because it was warm, but it was gone already…
We didn’t know what to do so we put it into a bag and nearby the garbage can so it doesn’t scare anyone?? Sorry.

I had someone find my cat and they also put him in a garbage bag out by the rest of the trash. My cat had a microchip and was well known in the area. I would have appreciated it if the person who found my cat had taken him to the nearest vet, where he could have been identified so they could have notified me. Instead, I found out what had happened from a kind neighbour.

    • I think it was nice the OP at least did something! I’m certain they felt bad enough finding the poor cat never mind being told they should have done something different. I wonder how many people just continued on their way?

      [0]
    • The OP just didn’t know what to do, some people don’t. I think their intentions are in the right place as I’m sure the people who found your cat were too.

Hi I’m the OP. I searched online for what to do but none of the websites told me anything. I hope more people read this and know, in case it ever happens to them :(:(:(
I guess I could have brought it to a vet…….. never occurred to me, sorry.
Yes, many cars drove by without stopping. Just drove around it.. there was also a bystander at the bus stop who just watched the whole time. :/

  3. Okay so if you see a dead animal you’re supposed to call 311 and they will come collect it, and bring it to Animal Control. It will be checked for ID. It will be held so anyone missing an animal with that description can check if it’s theirs.

  5. Please move the cat to a safe location, and contact 311.

Animal Control will pick him up, check him for ID, contact the owners and post him to their website.

This iss the only way the owners will know what happened to their missing pet … it will save them years of heart ache <3

  6. Oh boy… big as in chubby? My black cat got out on the 13th, 104 and 24ave….. he’s not a chubby boy but he’s lean and quite grown for his age. I’ve already contacted animal control. No sign of him yet 🙁

    • Awww, I’m sorry, I hope you find your kitty, hope he’s safe. Not knowing is the absolute worst. :’-(

    • OP says:

He wasn’t chubby. He was big in size but not skinny either. His most distinguishing trait was his tail, just a stub. Not recently cut I think…
Very very sorry if it’s your cat…

We saw it in the road and wanted to make sure if it was still alive we could rush it to a vet. It never occurred to me what to do if it weren’t alive. We stood there for quite a while trying to figure out what to do/ search online which gave me nothing. I’ve never been around anything deceased so to be honest I was scared. We couldn’t just leave it there.
      Sorry all.

  7. You should have called the city to pick it up . I did that once when I found a dead cat. I put it in a bag with a note. In case anyone got curious. Then the city came for it later. They also had a description for anyone that might call about their cat.

  8. Please call Animal Control and let them know what garbage you put the cat in. All deceased animals should be taken to a vet so they can be identified. If animals are chipped or tattooed, the vet will notify the owners. Please call 311 and ask for Animal Control so they can go get this cat, or if you could retrieve it, then at least the owners can be at peace knowing what has happened.

  9. No…. I mean I appreaciate you stopping but putting it in the garbage was wrong, it would have been better to have it picked up and taken to Animal Care & Control Centre – Edmonton so the owner can actually claim the body and cremate or bury as they would wish… imagine finding a dead cat in the trash – you don’t know the story..

    • read the post again…they put it NEAR the garbage. People may not have time or means to drive the cat to the ACCC. Judge much?

If you do not have the time then do not touch it. If that was my pet I would be upset that someone threw it out like trash. Even if it’s ‘near’ the garbage, it’s in a garbage bag. The garbage people will dispose of it like garbage.

    • Cori Duhamel Cori Duhamel says:

Do you really think the garbage people will be like ‘ oh this bag of garbage it’s just a little too far out of our garbage radius, let’s just leave it’ and if someone reports that they find cat remains in a garbage bag, most likely the news might hear about it and start telling the public there’s animal abuse happening.

      [0]
    • OP says:

By Cori’s logic, let us all remember-
If you don’t know what to do, DONT TRY TO HELP AT ALL! Just leave it there! It may still have been alive, but just leave it!!! You are incompetent and useless. Wait for someone who might know what to do, even if it means hundreds of cars pass by before someone finally stops. By then it’ll surely be dead. You’ll know what to do then!

I’ll be sure to remember for next time. Let our city become more and more heartless. Let us Canadians not be known for our kindness but for our selfishness.
Not even sarcastic at this point. Bye all.

    • Why can’t women ever be rational? Noooooooo constant judgment and fake morality 24/7. Crazy irrational broads.

    • Esther Maludzinski exactly what I was thinking!!!! At least the OP was kind enough and concerned enough to stop and at least put the cat In a bag. Better than leaving it exposed to magpies no? For some people it’s never enough!!!

    • Bonnie Rumsey Actually I used to work in an animal shelter. One day, around Christmas we went out and found a box with a dead cat in it. No idea if it was the person’s dead cat.. a cat somebody found.. nothing. So.. when I say what a person is supposed to do with a dead animal they found, I am talking based on logic, not on being judgemental. If the cat is in a bag the owner won’t know it’s there, they should have called 311 and allowed the animal control to pick it up and remove it properly (and legally too).

    • What this post is saying is what the OP did with the cat. Maybe they didn’t have time to deal with bringing it to a vet or to call 311. We as readers don’t know the circumstances so we shouldn’t judge their actions. At least they stopped, at least they did something.

  10. Yes, I agree… decent in a way that it was picked up… but not so much that it was disposed of. I had a friend whose cat went missing last year, yes he had a collar, but even if he hadn’t, the bodies should be dropped off to the animal care. I know how much I ached for my friends cat who went missing, I hate to think how this person feels if they don’t read this, they will never know what happened.

  13. Sarah Anne Sarah Anne says:

I would like to thank the person who wrote this for stopping to see the cat. They also took the time to write this in hopes to help a bit. As for putting it in a bag and in the garbage, they did what they thought was right at the time. Not everyone knows the proper protocol for reporting a deceased animal. If you have never owned one I wouldn’t really expect them to. They looked for a collar but there was not one. I imagine they will read these comments after and feel bad about not doing so. I am also sorry to the owner of the cat and hope they are able to somehow identify it so they can have closure.
We as people need to stop being so judgmental and try being kinder to our fellow humans.

  14. You’re supposed to call 311 and report it, not throw it in the garbage.

  15. Again, the comments just make me shake my head. I would be so grateful that someone moved my pet off the road. Gawd people.

  17. Can the OP message me please…

    • OP says:

Hi Kristin, a friend asked me to look into it for you, I found your cats’ pic in your profile and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t your cat. The cat I found had a very stumpy tail, almost like it was cut off a long time ago. It was very thick at the tip. I’m also pretty sure the one I found had dark/ darker eyes. Unless their pupils expand all the way when they pass….

Wishing that you’ll find your cat soon, good luck

  18. 311 actually is pointless. I called 311 to pick up a dead cat that was on my lawn and they told me it would take 3 days for them to pick it up but you can try

  19. When my now 9yr old cat was a kitten.. I took him on a leash and in my arms during rush hour traffic and we stood at the bus stop and I made sure to strike the fear into him about traffic. He was also taught that he can go to the backyard or to the front by the flower bed and that is it. He has snuck out and he knows his area. If we go further than the yard for walks (he has to be on a leash outside and supervised), we get the stroller.

  22. It is so kind of this person to stop to see if they could help or save the cat instead of just letting it lie there possibly dying. Thank you!
