Help! Cheapest utilities company combo?

I am currently with Encor by EPCOR and I am finding my bills to be extremely high! I have led lights, energy efficient appliances, conscious of water usage and have no leaks. My bills are around 800$ two adults in a 1200 sq Ft duplex.

What is the cheapest companies and or combination of utilities you gave found? I am a first time home buyer and I find this all very confusing.

I feel encor by EPCOR makes the bills extremely confusing… I call them to find cheapest plans but they are rude or try to sell me different products… Please help someone new in the market I am going to go bankrupt with my utilities bills.

I am looking for cheapest utilities combos, I have new new windows roof furnace etc. So thanks for energy savings tips but looking for best provider out there.

Thanks! This is a such a great group I look forward to responses!

  1. They’re all the same. You can use zero energy and you still get charged to death by “delivery fees”.

  2. I used to use Epcor but they gouge huge! I am with Best Energy now but it is hard to say which is the cheapest cause they all like to charge the most they can get outta ya. But i would say Epcor was the most expensive.

  3. I have regular Epcor for electricity, water, garbage removal, and for a family of six (including a stay at home parent, lots of laundry, multiple tvs, game systems, computers, etc) we typically spend about 190 per month. For gas we use direct energy which runs us about $120 per month.

  4. My in-laws live a 1200sq foot house and their bill is nowhere near that. Theirs is at most $300/month. You DEFINITELY need to get that checked out!!

  5. Delivery, transmission, rate rider, etc, all those fees are the same no matter who you’re with. And you’re unlikely to come out ahead on a fixed rate contract vs paying the floating market rates with Epcor and Direct Energy.

  6. Atco was good, stay away from Direct Energy

  7. That’s crazy. It sounds like you’re paying for both sides of the duplex. I have a huge old house and a pool and my utilities have never been that high.

  8. I’m with Encor with Epcor and my average bill is a little over $250 and that’s my power, gas, water, and garbage. Two adults.

  9. Atcoenergy great service I pay about 200-240 for winter months on both services and about 150 for both service in the summer call them get switched over

That is strange. We are with Encor by Epcor. Both power and gas on one bill. We have a 2000 sq ft house (5 people) and in the last 3 years our highest bill for one month was $312.00 (for January ‘17). That also includes our water and garbage!

That sound wrong. I have a 1400 square foot duplex and I pay $260 a month tops for everything through Encor. I’d be asking your attached unit what they are paying. You might be paying both sides.

That’s insane! We’re in a 1900 sq ft duplex, family of 5 & don’t use that much. We have Epcor for electricity, water, garbage, etc & always pay between $2-230/month. Direct Energy for natural gas & pay between $50-120/month depending on the time of year.

Is everything working well in the house. For months I was wondering why my epcor bill was on average 450-500 for water and power. No one is ever home, 2 bedroom townhouse, we are careful with water and power usage. Well there was a leaking toilet in my daughter’s ensuite, we found by pitting food coloring in her tank so 5 minutes work and a 12 dollar flapper for the toilet and it’s gone down by over 200 bucks a month! Wish I woulda figured it out months ago

  14. Check your usage yourself on your meter reader and then check your bill on how much they “say” you used and make sure it adds up the same

  16. Check out this company….apparently they buy utilities in bulk so it’s cheaper. They can do this because the utilities in Alberta and now unregulated. You pay them and they pay the utility company (ATCO, epcor, direct energy…etc etc)

  17. We have an almost 1400 sq ft townhouse, and it hasn’t gone over 300$ yet. We’re with Encor for everything. Check all your appliances and fixtures.

  18. wow something’s wrong I have a 2600sqft house and use them and my bills are around 300 in the winter and under 200 in the summer

Mine used to be like that and I’m almost positive it was because the landlord only half insulated the place

  20. All of the rates are very similar and the delivery fees are going to be the same no matter who you’re with. It might be an efficiency thing, because $800 a month is way too high. I’m with EPCOR for all of my services in a 1600 sq ft house and it’s always less than $300.

  21. Maybe check furnace. Rented a house 10 years ago and they put the cold air intake in the wrong spot so the furnace was always running and our bills were over $800 a month during the winter months. (Landlord wouldnt admit fault or do anything to help us so we ended up stuck paying off the bill and moved as soon as we could

  22. I use Enmax. My electric and gas are 200 a month

I have direct energy for gas and electric… my electricity alone is around 175.00 month and gas around 125.00 .. but total some months 350.00 … 1100 Sq ft bungalow . I have a concentrator that runs 24 hrs a day .. vehicles plugged in at minus 10 otherwise won’t start .. it’s a bit high .. but still good I think …. I would just take my bill and write down company names and call and ask them what they charge for electricity per km and same for gas

  24. I have my electricity through Epcot directly and encor by Epcor for gas. I pay usually electricity 3.59 and gas 3.69 on a flat rate. And my bill in a average month 2 level 1000 sq foot house with double garage heated is 400. With a old furnace. I had to switch to a flex on the electricity because on the contract I was paying 5.99 per kJ. It was double the price I saved 200 switching

    I’m with enmax and epcor.
My total bills for utilities in a 2600sq ft home… $350-400/mo
I have all the same things you do. Family of five.
Even when I ran a dayhome with five extra kids and a toilet leak my bills weren’t that high.

  27. There’s something wrong. I’m in a 1600 square foot HOUSE and our utilities are aobut half that in winter/month. Something isn’t right

    [0]
  28. Are you in some sort of contract with them? This is high. I have a 1400 sq ft 3 level (2 levels above grade plus basement) duplex. I have a 15 year old furnace and the windows are about the same age. I have direct energy for my heat – $100 or so/month. Water and power with Epcor- $250 or so per month. We are a family of 4. Something isn’t right with what you are being charged. The only thing I can think of is you are in a contract.

  29. I don’t think it’s your provider it’s your house we have a whole house 60 yr old house our bills are around 325 for everything gas , electric, water, sewage ,garbage and that’s with epcore

It sounds like there may be something wrong with your appliances and electronics – whether energy inefficient or they’re drawing more power than they should. I have a 814 sq. ft. home and even when I am lazy and leave the air con unit running 24/7, electric heaters, lights on, running the washer and dryer almost everyday, etc. I’m never over the high $60s.

  32. I don’t know my square footage. Bit I’m in a 3 bedroom 3 level townhome. I have a mid efficient furnace, dishwasher that I run almost daily. Led lights, huge windows in every room. I keep one window open a tiny bit up stairs always and like my house warm. It’s me and 2 kids that live in my home and my highest bill so far has been $350….. I’m not sure how your bill is $800 A month…. did you have a deposit when you hooked up the services? I was originally charged an $800 fee that was waved when I signed up for auto withdrawal. I am with encore by epcor.
Perhaps look into your energy use, how much water you use ect. Maybe unplug things when you leave the house? Also I dunno if it makes a difference or not but I have most things plugged into power bars.

I think you need to look deeper into why they are so high.

    I’m in a 1000 sq/ft house built in 1955. Minimal upgrades. 2 adults.

My power, gas and water combined are about $450/month. In winter.
