Help a Desperate Father

Help…… I am in a desperate need.

I recently was just offered a job but in order to get to the job I had to buy some gear and get a cheap car leaving me extremely broke ( as in negatives)………

I have little food, government won’t hear a thing about my issue and bills are about to be cut off….I cannot make the next week without it…..

I am a single father raising two kids on my own. I am extremely embarassed to be asking this…but with being laid off last year and not being able to find work until now…..it really strained my resources.

I am not asking for a handout. This is a temporary aid to help me be able to go to my job, earn a paycheque, and be able to support my family and children so they do not suffer. I have until monday to raise the funds as er the utilities request……

STORY CONTINUES BELOW

So, I am not asking for a hand out. What I will do is for every donation that is given to me I will match it off my future pay cheques to a charity of the donators choice.

I will post photos of the donations as I make them and make a youtube video of each transaction.

Do not consider this as a hand out, think of it as a temporary assistance for someone to aid others in the future.

Pay it forward.

  1. Go to the Food Bank. Talk to your church. Talk to your family. Tell utilities about your situation.

  2. They can not cut u off in winter. Alberta works will help u if u have disconnect notice they will pay u bill

  3. Utilities won’t be cut off in the middle of winter so you’re good until April 15 there. They may put a limiter on the power, enough to run your basic items – fridge and furnace, but gas should be fine.

You probably feel like you are just treading water. Keep at it. As they say, “You’ve got this!”

  6. Emergency Social Services will assist with shut offs-take your bill/documents for your power and or heat water and they will assess eligibility for one time payment on your behalf. Call the Salvation Army in regards to food-ask for a chaplain they will assist with food. If the “gear” was directly related and required by the company most will reimburse all or part of the costs with submitted receipts ask them. The food bank, and or some churches have care closets, food hampers etc that you can access.

    • No they won’t. Alberta works turns people away constantly. I had a job a needed one time help and they said no you have to wait to get evicted then come in

Dianne Machado unfotunately you had a bad experience, however that doesn’t mean everyone will.

    • Dianne Machado we had a situation years ago where we needed one time support we took documents in-utilities bill etc and got support as did others in similar situations-it depends on the circumstance and what the need is.

    • Alberta works are the judgiest people in the world and will find any excuse not to help you out. Having someone go over your bank statement and question where you spend your money when you’re already embarrassed asking for help is a pretty crappy feeling.

      [0]
    • They go over it and make sure your not spending on unnecessary things. Like liwour store, fast food etc etc.

      [0]
    • It’s an unfortunate necessity as many people do try to game the system and do make very, very poor financial choices so while it’s intrusive, it’s also necessary.

there are the food banks for food .. they they not judge people .. and will give you the day you go down .. just need AHC numbers for all in your family and they will give you food except for meat .. but you may get canned tuna or salmon but still you can use that in a casserole … utilities cannot get cut off until April some time as if they do and you freeze to death don’t think they want that on their conscience … as far as needing gear … most companies DO NOT reimburse as if you are accepting for example a plumbing job. then you should have gear for that job posting .. my son was in plumbing and it seemed like every company that he worked for they wanted some other kind of tool and he had to buy it … so for the tune of 2 or 300 dollars and no reimbursement is a lot … when being out of work and then needing to come up with this money .. good luck in your endeavours .. like I said food bank will get you food right away .. 1 man 2 children you will get lots of groceries .. and you can stay on at the food bank until you get your first couple of cheques .. but not long term

    • Actually…. they look at your bank statement to see how much money is in there. They do not question where you spend your money

      [0]
    • It really all depends on your worker. There are some super kind people working at Alberta Works that just want to see you get back on your feet. There are also judgmental assholes that will go through every transaction on your bank statement asking you to justify it (I had to explain at $5 purchase of pencils/lead/erasers from Staples and I had a lot of push back on it).

This also goes for the Food Bank. Years ago I was in a really bad patch. I had one box of Rice Krispies left and no income support for another 2 weeks. I contacted the food bank and the individual answering the home said they’re not for individual income support, they are service for families. It was a crushing blow to find out you’re not good enough for the Food Bank to help.

It’s stressful to wait until you get the disconnection notice for your bills but do that, then take them to Alberta works. Keep your receipts for your work gear they may reimburse you for that too.

  12. I thought power and heat could not be legally turned off this time of year, just have a regulator thing put on it until the bill is paid off. Beyond that, phone, cable, internet are all extras. So that leaves what? Water?

  15. Dianne I can guarantee you there’s more to the story you aren’t sharing.
Moreover there’s no harm in trying so quit trying to tell people not to access resources just because you couldn’t.

Friend of mine same thing kids and her got turned down because she paid mortgage instead of rent. She said I’m asking just one time help to feed my kids. But her ex husband had no problems getting help. Sometimes the system works and sometimes it doesn’t.

  22. Not 100% sure but I think the Bissell centre can help. If you have a disconnection notice… or not sure if its an option to set up a payment Plan with the utility companies.
    Anyway,
    Good luck

  23. Alberta works will help with past due bills, it’s a 1x thing, to help you get back on your feet.

  24. Take your bills to Alberta works and they will help pay them, they will only pay for the necessary bills such as Electricity, heat and water, not cable. Contact the food bank, unfortunately, Salvation Army no longer does the same day food hampers.

Sounds like you have not been to Alberta Works. With proof of employment they could cut you a check if you have not already gotten one for starting a new job. Also depending on what kind of job and what tickets you need they could cut you a check for safety tickets, license, or anything else that is required by this job. And they will cut you a same-day check at that.

  26. So sorry for your situation. Wish I could help but am not able to just now. Hope it all works out for you

Hey I am the op. I’ve tried Alberta works every time they turn me away….its frustrating. I hate handouts…hence y I am more than willing to repay via charity once I am on my feet. And the reason for an alt acct? If my ex found out she would try n take the kiddos away

    [0]
  30. try Alberta works.

I am the Op and unfortunately my experience has been the same, I got turned down once because I had gotten school funding the previous term despite being out of schools for 2 months already. And another time turned down because they did not believe I had custody of my kids because my ex refused to sign a letter til last minute.

I could possibly help someone if I can creep their fb to make sure they aren’t just a junkie. The belly shot in your fake account just doesn’t do it for me. People need help sometimes. There are plenty of people who need help why help someone who can’t even show their face. Never give money to someone who can’t look you in the eye. There are plenty of options available for you. Sorry dude.

Ebb Andflow please go to your mla, they will contact the supervisor at Alberta works and make them help you. We had to do it about 7 years ago…also there are pages on Facebook for assistance with food, people there will help as well. I now live on Aish so I don’t have anything, I don’t use the food bank because I leave that resource for people who have kids…there are 50 churches and such that do bread banks…there is one tonight at 5:00 at the church by Lakewood terminal, it is on Tuesday and Thursday…it is the church with the tall steeple.
