Income support

In order to get income support from the government, a person should have to be drug tested , checked for gambling issues and give 5 references.

The system is there to help those who need it , not for those who know how to use the system. There is a difference .

  1. I can fully understand drug and gambling but what exactly are you using references for lol. And 5 of them? You don’t even need that many to get a job lol

  2. We need to subject our elected officials to the same treatment as they end up costing us more…..

  3. Yeah? And we are all just so fucking blessed to be able to provide 5 references eh? No one in this world could possibly be alone and needing help.

Certain states have been drug testing welfare recipients and have found that it’s a waste of money. The program costs more money than it saves. You’re just fullof jt.

References lmao references for what? Someone needs to swear how broke you are or how much you are in need of help? Lmao what a crock of shit. What a totally worthless thing to say lol Drug testing sure… References? Lmaooooo

  6. I would think the people with drug problems or gambling addiction would need help the most. Social welfare is for everyone… Not just who you feel are “deserving”.

And who are you to decide what is or isn’t considered needy? Do you know everyone’s circumstances? Do you know what people go through? Maybe shut up and mind your own business. Is it because you were denied access to funds?

    • Maybe denied wrongfully.

I more then qualify for assistance have for Years now. Been fighting for it for years. But they will backdate to first application.. Oh wait I’m able to get jobs so I can try to keep afloat. A job that such a toll I don’t function outside of work and basic needs but because I can get a job and force myself through it I get denied. For trying to survive while going through appeals left right and center. But oh yea they will backdate so I can just sit and pray it happens before I totally break.

Yes a bit of mellow drama. Yet so damn close to the truth it’s not funny. You have no clue what prompted this post. Perhaps if people didn’t assume things there would be less people in need. Hmm…

  9. What if – in order to get a pay check.. a person had to be drug tested.. checked for gambling issues (OMG if you ever bought a lottery ticket you would never get a pay check).. and have 5 references.. pretty sure everyone in Hollywood would be out of a job..

They’ve already proven that drug testing welfare recipients costs the tax payers more than it saves. If they really wanted to fix the system they should make income support harder to qualify for and stabilize the cost of living. So that people making minimum wage can make ends meet and families where both parents are educated and have good jobs and work 50 hours a week aren’t sitting just above the poverty line.

I am medically unable to work
They have gotten every single document they needed and still deny me

  13. It’s unconstitutional and won’t happen in Canada so it doesn’t matter what you think. It’s also a giant waste of money.

  14. Why would you think people with addictions deserve less? Shame on you

  15. Yeppers. It shouldn’t be for everyone (it should only be for permanent residents and citizens of Canada). And those who are able bodied should only be allowed to receive a few months and be expected to work during that time. I know someone who has been on it for 6+ years and works under the table. After she blows her welfare on nails, smokes, etc, she cries that she’s behind on rent and has no food for her two kids.

  17. When I was a drug addict, the majority of years I was homeless and didn’t apply for social supports, which would landed me in hospital for approximately 2 years due to my health. Social programs actually save money.

Just wanna say I’m really impressed with the majority of the comments here calling out the OP. Addicts of any kind need support and assistance or, shock horror, they continue to be addicts. If someone is getting income support chances are they are already in a program of some kind or are on the radar of supportive organisations so they could be already being monitored and whatnot for their addictions. To assume that people should be drug tested to receive income support is asinine and completely inhumane and basically saying that if someone has an addiction they don’t deserve to live in a home or have food on the table.

Good timing for this post, have a friend going through this process.
I’d like to know why she can only get 700 a month as a single woman with no kids. And thats the best explanation she can get is that she is a single woman with no kids so thats all she’s worth. Doesnt matter after 25+ years of working this is her first time applying for anything, being kind of an emergency situation we figured there would be better support from the government. Is it even possible to live on a decent level on only 700 a month these days?
Anyone have any suggestions on this? Is this the normal or maybe something isn’t fully understood. I don’t know
Is it maybe that she is not armed with bogus dr’s notes and disconnection notices (yet), is fine and actively seeking work? I work…i don’t know how this process works to guide her, i just want to help get her on the right path…

    • Count yourself lucky. I am a mom of 3 and when my ex didn’t pay support I tried for food money and as I made 900 a month they said I made too much to help me.

Wow Josie Reykdal!!! So, its not just her status then. Hmm, not really sure where to guide her at this point. Thanks for your feedback.

    • If she had a child she would get 300 more, not exactly living in luxury.

    • If she has worked for 25+ years then isnt she entitled to get EI ?

That is all they allow, that is why people become homeless if they get sick and have no benefits…if she has to see a doctor she can get a note saying she needs phone and transportation, that will give her a bit more. If she has a special diet a note will give her a bit more. Also if she is off work due to illness she needs to ask to be set up on “barriers to employment” again she will need a doctor’s note, but it is about $200 more…don’t give her cash because she will have to report it and they will deduct it, you can pay a bill for her or give her food though…also she can get a bus pass for $35.00, at a rec center or downtown main transit office

Yes. I just don’t understand the dollar amount. I totally get not getting as much as someone with kids, that makes perfect sense. But these days that amount is pretty unrealistic.
I want to see our government officials or whoever makes these decisions live on 700 a month.

That ‘brilliant’ idea will cost us billions for nothing. Nothing.
There are no positive social accomplishments to be had from this idea.
Just throwing money out the window.
Let’s throw that money into subsidized rentals and actually deal with poverty.
