Last city election

I was very disappointed in the turn out that we had for the last election in regards to voting for new mayor and city councillors.. the majority of the people I know are not happy with Don and now we have him for 4 more years ..

He is a biker and those bike lanes will be getting us into trouble .. money has to be cut back in the spending .. and they sure liked to spend .. look at the price of those silver balls at the Talus Dome $600,000. .. Americans got the contract on that … what was wrong with the Edmontonians and their art work? .. there is enough artwork around the city which is something the mayor and the city councilors like … this should be put to a vote when they are spending that kind of money and the people should be deciding if they want this .. not the mayor as spending this kind of money on art is putting us further and further into debt ..don’t you think he would be thinking of ways of saving us money and getting the city OUT OF DEBT … increase in property taxes for the seniors .. can you imagine if their homes are not paid for and living on CPP .. OLD AGE … GUARANTEE SUPPLEMENT .. is not big money and EPCORE .. ELECTRICAL goes up and LAND TAX .. car insurance.. house insurance goes up and the seniors get an increase of 0.3% this year which is effective either at the end of Oct of Nov .. not sure … what a joke that is ..as the mayor / councilors took an increase of 3% and mayor is getting over $218,000 plus he is to be taking a cut in pay along with the councilors … in October 2017.. do you know that the EDMONTON MAYOR IS THE HIGHEST PAID MAYOR IN CANADA …how did that happened … sounds crooked to me … who do they think they are .. are WE ARE PAYING FOR IT through our taxes? …. some of us can barely feed our family … with mortgage .. car payments .. car insurance .. working 2 jobs .. utilities .. groceries .here is what the mayor and city councilors get paid last year ……………….. ………….
Mayor .Councillor
………. ..Salary $224,582 ……….. $120,285
………….RRSP Contribution $24,704.02 …….. .$13,231.35
………….Vehicle Allowance $17,161.44……….. ..$8,406.96
………….Transition Allowance $12,956.65……….. $6,939.52
………….Total $279,404.11…. $148,862.83………….. plus they are not paying taxes .. but now they will have to pay taxes according to the government .. and Iverson was disputing this … I also think that the terms should only be held for 2 terms … making a total of 8 years and then they cannot run again …. need fresh ideas in city hall and that is a good thing … and people that will stand up against the mayor if they are in disagreement with bike lanes and stupid artwork, the waterfall (how often is this used… IT IS NOT .. THE WATERFALL HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN after the millions spent to build this) The cost — between $1.1 and $2.6 million — left Coun. Mike Nickel recommending the taps be turned off for good.. there should not even be a fund for artwork .. should be a miscellaneous fund (?)for like where you get the xmas decorations out of and street lights at xmas … that is where that percentage should be going .. and if art work is seriously needed .. go and get it from that fund and get local people to do the art work and not bring in someone from another country …. because we have a fund the city council sure wants to spend it ..

Another idea the city had which was a waste of money was the stairs from the downtown area. The Mechanized River Valley Access project makes the river valley more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It runs from the top of 100 Street near the Hotel Macdonald to the river valley trail system near the low level bridge and the price on this one was $24 million and both prov and federal govt plus city supported this idea along with River Valley Alliance, and the latest thing the city council is looking at was a gondola from the south side across the Ft. Sask. river to the down town area … WE NEED TO STOP BUILDING AND START FIXING OUR ROADS TO IMPROVE THE LOOK OF OUR CITY

  1. Sorry. The silver balls were Mandel.

  2. As I read further, you are blaming our current Mayor for things that are not even in his jurisdiction, but are provincial or federal matters.

Well I agreed with the first sentence. Voter turn out was stupidly low and all the people complain but they didn’t go and vote….

  4. I didn’t like the result but that’s the price we pay for democracy. The fact that the next best person for the job ran on a campaign that we should allow smoking in bars shows just how little competition there was.

Also, all you’ve done is whined and bitched. What are your proposed solutions?

    • Sharon Swan Sharon Swan says:

My solution is to fix the roads which are so Bay in need of repair .. maybe you don’t drive .. I don’t know .. but they are in a mess .. and not only the main streets but in residential as well … so fix up what needs fixing instead of spending money where it is not needed ….

    • Sharon Swan “Fix the roads” is pretty general. That’s like saying “End world hunger”

That RVA is very good at wasting our money. Who the heck are they and why do they receive our tax dollars at more junk that doesn’t work in our cold winters. Don’t get me going on the ridiculousness of the LRT. Too many professional politicians running our city. As a senior, I’m having a tough time making ends meet while time and money is spent catering to the few that ride bikes in the winter.

    • Sharon Swan Sharon Swan says:

Exactly … don’t see that many riding bikes and all that time spending money painting sidewalk space for bikes then 2 lanes of vehicles need to get down same road .. tight squeeze some times it looks like .. wasted money there for sure

  6. Stop expecting someone else to do it. Run yourself. Bitching won’t fix it. Make the change you want.

That word salad made very little sense. You’re mixing municipal, Provincial and Federal responsibilities. Your dates are all mixed up…

Did you see the other candidates? No one else was worth voting for. With no true opposition there will be low turnout.

  10. re: “increase in property taxes for the seniors .. can you imagine if their homes are not paid for and living on CPP .. OLD AGE … GUARANTEE SUPPLEMENT .. is not big money and EPCORE .. ELECTRICAL goes up and LAND TAX .. car insurance.. house insurance goes up and the seniors get an increase of 0.3% this year which is effective either at the end of Oct of Nov ..” And this is why people need to live below their means, save money and be responsible for themselves. Property tax increases affect everyone. Not just seniors. Remember we used to have city councils who were proud of their ‘no new tax increases’. They ran the city on a shoestring budget and you could tell. Potholes the size of small cars. No new infrastructure. Etc. Life costs money. Rec centres, decent roads, schools, et al don’t come cheap. Edmonton was on the verge of becoming a neglected dump. The last decade or so has seen a huge turnaround for this city and it has become a very nice place to live. Sorry if the OP is having financial problems but the rest of us cannot be expected to suffer and live in a broken down dump just because he/she is miserable. Moral of the story? Live like you are going to get old. Figure out a budget. Live below your means. Save and invest for your own future so when you hit the golden years your house will be paid off, the fact prices and costs go up won’t come as a surprise, and you won’t be complaining about getting a .3% increase in your socialism-inspired government pension.

This is me .. ended up single in my senior years and still paying for a mortgage. .. it is very tough .. with old age CPP ..little from my other pension ..and yes every year taxes rise .. utilities go up .. my pensions DON’T GO UP the amount these increases go up YET TRUDEAU has given himself a raise along with his cabinet members and seniors got nothing ..

      [0]
    • Sharon Swan You didn’t hear what Thomas said. Why are you single and still paying for a mortgage? How about getting a roommate to cut expenses? If you are a senior then you should be old enough to know that all politicians are in it for themselves. So stop relying on politicians to fix your problems. Trudeau’s raise has nothing to do with your expenses.

As for property taxes, look into options such as deferring those taxes until your home is sold. I believe that’s a provincial program.

  13. I’m tired of reading about how awful our government is, there will always be an opposite side to criticize whoever is in power at the time. there will always be criticizem from people, we will never all just be happy and content with whoever is in power. I’m tired of politics, I dont know what to think, as long as there is separate parties people will always be divided.

  16. I like our mayor. I think the bike lanes are quite literally the stupidest thing to ever be implemented in this city. This city is definitely planned and built by bureaucrats. Thank goodness the ppl here are amazing. lol.

  17. sorry lost me in this political comment once you said Americans gave us silver balls. I know its true however just the thought we paid 600 000 to get silver balls from Americans just made me realize what is wrong with political scene. They wanted to get Mexico to pay for a wall(cant imagine the cost) and they succeeded in giving us silver balls….for 600 000.Those Americans and their shady deals.
