Looking for senior friends

My nanny died when I was 14. She was my best friend. I have no other family then my mom and brother. I miss hearing stories from the past. Seeing older people smile. I want senior friends. I’m 23. Live alone with my cat. I enjoy playing cards, crib and drinking tea. I can’t have scheduled volunteer time as I never know how I am myself. I’m a spontaneous person so scheduled booking times don’t work work for me. Anyone senior want to be my friend?

  1. Can I ask why you like seniors, cause you are very young?

Volunteer with ahs they are looking for people to visit at homes. Or in the hospitals. Sometimes the inpatients don’t get a lot of company.

  8. It’s nice to befriend the elderly. The stories they can share, the truthfulness in their eyes and lastly, the kindness many can show. I know what you mean my grandparents are gone as well. It’s nice to have that balance in life.

  9. Maybe you could 0ick up one of the senior magazines and see the different places that you could apply or leave a note of some sort…

I admit to not noticing that part. But the op could still use that as a networking opportunity. They might know of someone who could benefit from a drop in type schedule.

  12. Seniors are my favourite people. I am a nurse and many of the pts on my unit are seniors. Been there 11 years and i dont think i will leave. They truly are the amazing generation. Apply to volunteer at grey nuns hospital. Our pts get very lonely as some dont have family that come to visit them. All they want is someone to talk to.

Lately I get angry easily. Then I just want to take a few pills and die. I googled what do eyes look like when you are dead. I want to go away. My son does not live me, he only contacts me when he is in need. My daughter loves me (only person who does) her son just got out of hospital, has severe Lyme disease, and is fighting for quality in his life, right now he has an I’ve that goes from his elbow to his neck then to his heart. My little Elliott boy is going through the worst! They drained his knee, he had septic infection. … I know I sound greedy but it is Christmas, and I go days without talking to anyone but my cats. I used to be a living, happy, carefree, person… Now I’m afraid to open my curtains, I barely go outside the house, I got invited to Christmas dinner by two people today. I said I just like to be alone. I don’t like it, but it surly is safer

when you volunteer they schedule you so if you have to just go when it works for you a structured volunteer position doesn’t work

Catholic Social Services has a program where you are partnered up with a newly housed homeless person.

You would be perfect for this program. All they want is a friendship, someone to chat, play cards, go for a coffee etc.

Most people are flexible do no rigid schedule.

You have lots to offer, this program could be a win win for you.

Old people don’t want to tell stories, we want to bond and live a few young moments! If we remember something and say it…it is not a story we are telling, simply a shared experience. We live alone, we only all to cats for days and days. Then in December, some person comes up, treats us like we are charity cases for talking to us, and acts nice…then what? January comes, we are ignored again… Just leave us alone! 80% of us are happier going with what we know, and keeping our lives steady. Quit walking in and trying to make yourself feel better. You are actually being worse and making our lives worse

  21. Yes, but the elderly often have a schedule and routine they stick to, especially in senior homes. My grandfather was in assisted living from may until December (after Grandma passed away), and even as his grand daughter, I couldn’t just drop in. You can’t just spontaneously show up to volunteer with people who have med schedules, or meal times, or organized outings.

Stacey is right, go do what she suggested here. if you attend any church, you could see the minister there & tell your request. Or go to any of the nursing homes, probably any close to where you live & go to the office in the building & ask them their requirements for becoming a volunteer! You’re a thoughtful young lady & it’s great you want to do this! you’ll find it’s a very rewarding experience for both you & the resident.

I think it’s more… can’t guarantee to be avalible every week for set amount of time. Maybe they can only go once In a while and maybe only for one hour instead of 3-4?
