LRT Parking not fully utilized now…

So it’s been almost a year now since the City of Edmonton changed so much of the FREE LRT parking to PAID, and since then I’ve noticed that the PAID lots are not full. Before the change, the lots were full every day.

So, it’s obvious that there are less people driving to the LRT parking lots and taking the train. If you are one of those people who USED to drive to the LRT and take the train, can you please answer why you are no longer?

Is it:
A) You’re carpooling with somebody else who is driving.
B) You’re taking other public transportation.
C) You’re driving all the way to work/school and skipping public transportation entirely.
D) Something else.

  1. I’m subletting a parking spot from one of my coworkers. I’m paying her not much more than what I was paying to take the train. Way more convenient when you have lots of appointments. I was paying for a parking spot at Belvedere LRT. Not worth it.

My understanding is the pay lots are no cheaper than most work parking spots so paying for parking and then a $95 bus pass is likely the reason. It would be for me

    • Yes because apparently the ETS did a survey and riders said they would be willing to pay for spots, but “no more than $50” lol Whatever so that, combined with a bus pass, it’s $20 more for me to park downtown. No brainer really.

    • I would be driving my own car instead of paying for parking.

The city said that there was a wait list of 1800 people for the paid parking. But when they changed the free parking mysteriously there is 2 rows of empty parking. They are just trying to get people to pay more.

I would guess that paying 90 bucks for a bus pass and then another chunk for parking…it maybe would be cheaper to just drive and pay for parking there, depending on where you have to go everyday?

  5. I used to drive to the lrt after I dropped my kids off at the day home. Now they are older, I catch the bus from home. So less stressful.

D- every time I try to drive and park my vehicle in the free area it’s full. I paid for parking a full 24 hours and still got a ticket. So now I just leave earlier and bus from my house and then train it

I don’t park and take the LRT but it’s sure made parking anywhere near my house a giant pain in the ass. I love lugging a car seat and a two year old way down the street to get home.

  18. This is so frustrating for people that use it for one-off trips. I showed up one day to take the train to the U of A hospital and couldn’t get a spot. Drove around all of Clareview trying to find a spot (lots of empty pay spots though). Eventually had to race to the hospital and pay for parking there. Was almost late for my appointment. Never trying that again.

  19. Thats because the useless bureaucrat parasites are the most useless people is the world, the only thing they can do is tax people (yes its a tax, a tax on top of a taxpayer funded carpark). We could have free public transport if we get rid of half of these useless people.

This was and remains now one of the biggest and stupidest money hungry decisions edmonton has made. They make money on parking but ridership goes down so they can lay off workers and save money that way as well. Disgusting. Absolutely terrible

  22. Then pay for a spot…… there are waiting list to get into the paid side to reserve a spot……..so regardless if the lot has open spaces it’s still being paid for…….

  25. The lots are always emptier in the summer months when the University students aren’t in class, once September hits those lots will fill up again

    • Fuller Yes. 100% full, no. I take the LRT every day from Clareview to Churchill. I cannot recall a single time that Clareview & Belvedere paid lots are 100% full.

I park at clareview and take the LRT to Corona. The first year I parked in the free area and it was a struggle every morning to find a spot. I now pay $50 and park in the paid area and I don’t regret it one bit. But I question the reason why they increased the paid area because the lots are half empty
