Need for Social Change

I would encourage all Edmontonians who take the bus to just stop paying for the “service”.

They let every disgusting fare evading douchebag on and the fare-paying public and drivers are sick of it.

ETS and the City spend those dollars so incredibly stupid. Enough!!!

  1. I take the bus all the time, sadly most often the driver let’s ppl on without paying the fare, then you an hear them laughing about it. And, ppl with mental illness get on too for free, some are not well and that is a security risk to all riders. I wish the admin staff at ETS would ride the bus for one year and see the huge problems.

    • So are you saying that people with mental health issues should not be allowed on the bus because you feel they are a safety risk? Or shouldn’t be allowed on for free?

      [0]
    • I think ETS is well aware of the huge problems, they’re mirrored everywhere.

    • Valerie Cooper thanks for twisting me words!

    • Darlene Bailey I was not trying to twist your words, actually trying to understand what it is exactly that you are saying. Please clarify so I know what you meant.

    • Valerie Cooper last fall i take my regular bus and the same guy got on the bus shaking, talking to himself and swearing to other riders, one time I got off the bus the guy got off too, as well another rider, he was shaking his fists and swearing trying to fight him. Numerals time this guy got on the bus for free.

    • So just because a person has a mental illness you don’t think they should be allowed to take public transit? It’s too bad that a lot of them also aren’t allowed to drive so I guess that means they’re stuck walking… Oh but wait, many of the homeless who you’ve already said shouldn’t take public transit also have physical disabilities which means they also have difficulties walking.. so they’re supposed to just not be able to get places? Maybe we ought to just round them all up and segregate them from the rest of society since their existence is an inconvenience to you.

    • Darleneyou should be thankful that you don’t suffer from the horrible diseases that they do! They suffer daily and then have people judge them and treat them like trash. Perhaps if more people were kind to them they wouldn’t have so much resentment or anger. I have worked with people who suffer from mental health issues and I want you to know many of them are brilliant and very kind. I have also fed hundreds of homeless every Wednesday with a great group of people and know first hand how polite, kind , and solid they are. I actually had a couple of homeless step up and save my back from someone trying to attack me. So don’t judge all with the same brush! Yes, some can be aggressive or rude but then again so can some “normal” people. Not all of them are druggies or drunks either, that’s a stereotype ignorant people came up with because they didn’t take the time to actually talk to or get to know any of them! They have just as much right as you do to take the PUBLIC transport system, if you don’t like it perhaps you should stop taking it and walk or buy a car, after all you a healthy normal person so that shouldn’t be hard for you!
      Judging sucks doesn’t it?
We are all humans, and should all be treated humanely!

ETS drivers aren’t action heroes. I’ve seen some of these situations get pretty ugly, so cut the drivers a break. They want to go home at the end of the day just like you would.

  3. It’s for the drivers safety that they are not allowed to question or demand a fare. It’s not because they don’t care about safety it’s literally because that’s their first thought.

  4. Who is going to protect the driver when the kick the scofflaw off the bus? You? You realize that drivers are alone and they cannot count on the public to defend them. This is one of the main reasons why they are allowed on with out payment. Safety for everyone.

  5. Ya sure… do that and I don’t mind all of my property taxes going up.

  6. I dont see this happening all the time or so much that it deeply disturbs me… i think some people really need to understand whats it like to be on the other end of the table before they can bother bitching. Seems like the majority of people just live to bitch.

Calm down, I’m sure more of my property taxes go towards transit than your month bus passes.

It’s a case by case scenario but I resent having to pay for a bus pass when all you have to do is ask and you can ride for free. Sometimes it’s not safe for the driver to confront but there was one time where the guy was swearing and punching at the walls of the bus while drinking a bottle of vodka. This was at the WEM terminal, the driver was ON the bus and could have gotten a dozen other drivers, peace officers and they have panic buttons. The thing is – there ARE some drivers around here who say ‘no’ and the people don’t get violent, they just get off.

  9. I used to climb on the bus for free when I was a homeless women years ago because it was safer than being murdered by a stranger and safer than a cab driver or regular Joe Blow driver demanding a blowjob for a short ride.

  10. Leslie Berg Leslie Berg says:

I believe if someone is desperately in the need of a ride for either safety reasons or they just can’t simply afford it and it’s freezing outside or whatever they should not be denied a ride! We live in such a terrible time for homelessness and kids who are high risk stop complaining about such petty shit if they need a hand up allow it stop being so entitled!

  11. Bus driving is a demanding and sometimes dangerous job. Quit whining and get off their case. It’s a judgement call for them and life is never going to be fair just so you don’t feel ripped off. Either get used to it or stop keeping score on everybody else, for your own happiness’ sake.

I had my bus the other night stop and sit there for five minutes because some dumbass got on without paying and just go and take a seat. Now people do this because they think the bus is free all the time! This needs to STOP. Needless to say when I confronted the driver because I missed my connecting bus and had to wait a half hour he said ” I dont give a shit, I’m on time”. This also needs to stop. Regardless, there are many problems on the ets that need to be fixed and fare evasion and ignorant drivers are just a couple

    • Shaun Reveis Shaun Reveis says:

So because you thought it was your job to confront to driver, you missed your connecting bus, and you blame the driver…?

      [0]
    • Brad Daniels Brad Daniels says:

Read it again. He stopped and made me miss my connecting bus. Then I confronted him and he got ignorant with me.

    • Any chance that was his/her “Timing Point” You can see on their monitor either “Late, Early or On Time” So if the operator said they were running on time…That was likely a timing point. Also, ignorant means: lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated. DOES NOT mean rude.

      [0]
    • Brad Daniels Brad Daniels says:

His screen wasn’t logged on and I know that’s not a timing point because it’s 3 stops before the transit center he sat there and stared in his mirror at her without saying a word, when other passengers started getting angry is when he spoke up and said why he was sitting there

    • Maja Black Maja Black says:

If the screen goes down control is immediately warned and they call the driver…you are lying

    • Drivers are told not to push for fare for their own safety.
Most people are decent and will pay their fare.
Did you know your fare covers a small part of the actually cost to transport you? Its actually more like $13 (or up, my figure is dated) to get you from point A to point B. Maybe you would like to chip in the rest of the money to cover what it actually a costs to transport you.

      [0]
    • if the driver was on time according to his schedule (not sure if what he said was actually true) then it’s your own fault you missed your connecting bus lol

      [0]
    • Brad Daniels Brad Daniels says:

Hahaha yeah it’s so funny when I have the bus schedule right in front of me and I know he’s late and he knows he’s late and I know What time my connecting bus leaves yet I’m left waiting 30 minutes in the cold because he wants to sit there without saying a word btw for 5 minutes instead of telling her to get off and being done with it. If what I was saying wasn’t true then I wouldn’t have said anything about this. I wouldn’t have filed a complaint with ets because of how rude he was and the fact that he was very unprofessional about it.

      [0]
    • File a complaint. Most buses have cameras and the timing points are monitored. IF he left 5 minutes late they would know about it and have called him. This can all be verified. So if your so upset, call.

      [0]
    • Brad Daniels Brad Daniels says:

I did file a complaint right after it happened

      [0]
    • So let us know what the outcome is then.

  14. Amazed by the anger and lack of compassion in comments….. I do not drive so I use the bus primarily. The drivers are only human , like the rest of us, so they deserve a break ! I have seen how easily a driver could be put in a dangerous situation…….not worth risking a life over $3.50 fare. I have also seen how few of you will step in and back a driver up !!!!

  15. Omg it’s cold! You’re the douche bag!

  16. I just smdh!! Be thankful you can afford to pay the fare!! Imagine what it would be like in their shoes! Grrrrr I hate people! SO MUCH!

My daughter has tried to get on the morning bus headed for school without her bus pass over the years, and they have denied her. So do they deny her because she is tiny and non threatening-looking?

Our city bussing, blows the big one. Lets just throw it in the garbage, and start over. Lol

  18. I’m not sick of it. I pay my fare. Many of the people they let on without paying look homeless or severely low income. It’s fricken’ cold outside. Let these people come on the bus and get to where they need to be. You want to sit there and complain about ‘fare evading douchebags’ but you can’t even afford an ounce of compassion.

There has been more than one bus driver attacked by people on or getting on the bus, including January last year over an expired bus ticket. These drivers put up with a lot of verbal abuse. They shouldn’t have to fear for their safety over a bus ticket.
