Pedestrians!

Hey pedestrians of our fair city. I hope you’re doing well. Can I just say I appreciate and applaud the confidence with which you charge out into the streets of Edmonton without a care in the world, blissfully unawares of the 5000lb vehicle trying it’s damnedest to stop in time and not slide directly into you during this snowy season?

Keep your hoods up, definitely keep looking directly ahead, and never make sure people are able to stop in time!

This is just a friendly reminder to all you people walking the streets that the laws of physics doesn’t give 2 shits about who has the right of away! 🙃

  2. Mm what about the people in their nice warm vehicles that dont stop for us pedestrians crossing the street and then have the decency to stare at us the whole time they go right through the MARKED CROSS WALK?? If drivers would just stop for us pedestrians when they know they are there we wouldnt be the ass hats to just walk into the road. And im talkig the vehicles that have over a block to stop but dont even try to stop. How are kids supposed to walk to school safely if vehicles wont stop at the cross walks?

    • I agree that there are many drivers that need to pay attention and some that just don’t bother to stop.
But from the other side ..there are MANY adults ( I’ve witnessed more school aged kids with more common sense) that simply walk out into the road without so much as a glance … it’s slick and it’s difficult to stop, whether it’s a marked cross walk or not. I believe those are the people the OP is targeting.

    • It’s definitely drivers as well. People won’t use cross walks if drivers won’t obey. Of course some will still do what they want. Edmonton is bad for people being dicks and not stopping for anyone.

    • Drivers aren’t talking about crosswalks, it’s the pedestrians that are constantly crossing in the middle of the street, the pedestrians who even though the light says DONT WALK insist on impeding turning vehicles by crossing anyhow. Traffic signals contain 2 sets of lights, the crossing light for pedestrians and traffic lights for vehicles the one with the orange hand that says WAIT is the pedestrian signal light, the rest are meant for vehicular traffic WAIT doesn’t mean If I hurry, I can cross. It means WAIT TILL THE NEXT CYCLE OF LIGHTS!

Yes I was at a cross walk and if it wasn’t for the fact I was paying attention I could have been run over cause some lady decided not to stop for me even though I was clearly at an intersection paying attention. We locked eyes even and she drove right through.

    • Ruth Chalk sadly it happens everyday when i walk my kid to school i lock eyes and they stare as they drive right through…maybe snow/ice balls thrown at the cars will teach them to watch out for us pedestrians.

It’s so frustrating. But what can you do?

      [0]
    • I know it sucks. Some days i feel like walking out into the road (without my kids) after i lock eyes with a driver and wait for them to hit me and then sue. And see if i win for having eye contact and being in a marked crosswalk (not with lights) and them failing to stop at a marked crosswalk.

Crystal Rahko-Pitawanakwat If you’re stupid enough to walk out onto the street EVEN at a marked intersection without looking, you deserve to be hit. You’re venturing out onto a road!! You know, where vehicles are meant to be. You wouldn’t last a millisecond in Europe. Look both ways before crossing a street!!! How hard is that?

      [0]
    • MC Elliott actually i do look derp. I even do eye contact and still no stopping so why should i have to freeze waiting to cross a street when all the ass hats are in nice warm vehicles that get them to their destination faster than i can walk? Waiting 5-10 seconds for me to cross wont take up your whole day. But when theres busses cars etc and not one person stops for someone AT A MARKED CROSS WALK thats the dick move. I could just j walk ive noticed alot more people stop for j walkers than they do for people in the damn cross walks. And never been to Europe probably never will. And Europe has nothing to do with here.

    • Crystal, this post is about pedestrians being too confident when walking out onto a road way. The streets are snow packed and icy. It is very difficult for bigger vehicles to stop on a dime, in fact they can’t. I applaud the OP as this may be a reminder to some that needed reminding.

Ruth Chalk Please keep remembering to watch for traffic to stop before stepping into the crosswalk. Thank you for taking care of yourself.

    • Agreed smh ppl these days just turn corners without even checking first even tho that’s the rules of driving

  4. Thank you for stating the obvious I ALWAYS stop for pedestrians as I am in a warm car but 1 out of 20 will look first but proceeding

  5. Pedestrians should not have the right of way anyways

I understand it’s cold for people walking…but damn it…use those two things called “eyes” and remember a little rule most parents taught their kids when they were very little “look both ways before crossing the street”. It’s not rocket science people….

  8. I hate driving downtown because of people like this. Its gonna land me in jail!

  9. In a few months, when the snow is gone, I’ll be cursing about the bicycles on the sidewalks who just merrily cross the street without stopping, or getting off their bikes to WALK. I’m shocked more of these aren’t hit.

  10. Ruth Chalk Ruth Chalk says:

Okay I look both ways before crossing any street and will either wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop or wait till the area is clear. However it does not mean drivers will always stop for pedestrians.

  11. There is a lot of problem/misconceptions with this first, the definition of a pedestrian is crossing at a legal point to walk across the street – meaning cross walk, the only exception to this are Rollerblade and skateboard. If you cross illegally you are a Jay walker. Bike MUST dismount to be considered a pedestrian otherwise they are a moving vehicle and are subject to proper right of way and vehicular laws meaning they have to yield to oncoming traffic. Although looking both ways is a great suggestion however it is not law and unfortunately for us drivers makes it harder to drive especially if people jaywalk on the do not cross light.

    • Even if you are at a crosswalk, stop, look, then procede WHEN SAFE! Yes, vehicle drivers need to pay closer attention and actually stop, but sometimes the can’t just stop on a dime in icy weather.

  12. Good point. I try to drive carefully but if my vehicle starts to slide there is nothing I can do. I would be devastated If I should hit someone while I was behind the wheel. Please be on guard. Neither of us would be a winner.

I have waited up to 4 whole crossing times to cross one road. Sometimes cars don’t even care to try to stop especially if they are turning. Why do I have to keep my little one out in -40 weather so the cars can bolt thru MY cross time. Try checking the cross walk before plowing thru it next time!!!!!

  15. So true. They walk out without even looking!

  16. I enjoy the pedestrians that start crossing when it is already flashing to NOT cross. It’s awesome the way that little selfishness can back up traffic fast because people CANNOT turn then. For the record I am a pedestrian too sometimes and I respect the rules of the lights. Respect from both sides would be a great thing!

  17. As a professional driver I’ve seen this too often. The wait light go’s on and pedestrians continue to wander across the street just like a herd of cattle. 100 Street and Jasper is one of the worst placed in this City, on more than one occasion I have sat at that intersection through an entire light waiting for these people to cross; and as the buses off load NB on 100 Street the stream just continues to grow.

  20. So true…
easier to stop 100-200 lbs than 4000-6000 lbs…

    Common sense. ..
    not so common

  21. They say you’re supposed to make eye contact with the vehicle before you walk infront of it. I remember when a good friend of mine with the most beautiful blue eyes was hit by a bus. The bus broke her eye socket and her eyeball popped out.
