Pre school / head start

My son will be 4 in June and I am lost for finding a head start ? I live in the west end.

How much does it cost? Am I better off putting him in a daycare?

Please help!

  1. Head Start is free, including bus service. The spaces fill up very quickly so I would contact them directly to find out if your child qualifies.

Amazing program at most schools. You need to be tested, and you may qualify for funding

  4. If Head Start is not an option, you can find a preschool here: http://www.napta.ca/find-a-preschool.html

Cost varies a lot depending on things like hours, number of days, if it’s a parent co-op, etc. Many will be having open houses soon, so contact ones you might be interested in so you can attend an open house or arrange to visit. Registration for most preschools/playschools starts soon.

  8. Why are parents in such a rush to get rid of their children?

    • Linda Landriault Because we don’t love them and need some time away from them.

I’m hoping this isn’t mom shaming but since you asked…early start education can potentially improve their success rates later in life. School is not mandatory in Alberta until grade one so parents can do this themselves though.

    • There was no preschool for my children, me, parents, grandparent and we all turned out great. 2 of my boys were honor students in high school. I just think time goes by so fast and they already have 12/13 years in school, why make it more? Teach your children at home, go to the park, go on a night out and get a sitter so they are use to non family giving instructions, teach them how to tie their shoes, abc’s etc. jmo

Turned out great she says.yet is a judgemental tool
Ya ok. Lol maybe you should’ve learned some compassion an know it’s a new an different age. Smh

    • Maybe some people need to work? Early education sets children up for success. Dont be a judgmental parent, you know nothing about this persons situation. Maybe this person doesnt have family, or friends. Ps. Parents know what is best for their children. Many parents want to stay home with there children but they cant afford it.

    • I want my son in daycare early to learn more and develop skills also he is the only child. He needs to interact with other toddlers. He is 2 yrs old.

    • Liz Large Hahaha. I thought the same thing. Kids go to daycare/preschool to learn how to interact with other people and learn people skills. Linda is showing the proof of why that is needed.

    • Linda Landriault wanting your child to excel in life does not mean you’re in a rush to get rid of them!! The more opportunity your child has to learning the better off they’ll be. The earlier the better actually. Ever hear of success by 6? By 6 your child should have a good understanding about gross and fine motor skills etc ….. if 4 is too young which it’s certainly is not…. what’s gonna happen by age 6? Your child will be behind. Especially in a structured setting. Don’t forget social skills are very important too….

    • You all talk about learning and social skills! Why can’t the parents do this? lmao Oh right, parents only spoil their children and can’t teach them! Self centered people!

    • Linda Landriault some kids need extra help. Like mine. Who have brain injuries. You’re pretty self righteous.

    • Melanie Graham Whetstone Well you are a 100% different case!

    • Linda Landriault some people also need these programs for children that have speech delays, and do not respond or talk. So parents are trying to find ways to HELP their children by getting them ready for school so they are not bullied when they start school. Everyone has different reasons and your judging doesn’t help!

    • Linda Landriault you are very rude. The OP is trying to make a decision they feel is best for their child. Your judgment and remarks are not helpful and not needed, should have kept scrolling. You don’t know this person’s or others situations and have made a lot of assumptions in your statements. Maybe you would have done better in a head start program to teach you better social skills.

    • Linda Landriault just because a parent decides to go back to work rather then stay home doesn’t make them less of a parent or mean they don’t love their children any less. Some go back due to financial reasons and some go back because they need that routine and adult interaction. I’ll use the same argument you used but instead my mom went back to work and I went to daycare and I turned out well. My niece was in daycare from the age of one and is above her peers in grade one. She’s reading at a grade 3 level. Whether your a stay at home mom or you go back to work is each individual parents decision. As long as they are being loved, nurtured and read to, they will be just fine. The world would be a better place if people would stop judging every little thing each parent does differently.

    • Preschool is not necessary but it’s a choice people can make.

    • Linda Landriault because they are annoying af money sucking little monsters

    • For one thing there are children who need that extra help. Don’t judge others because they choose to educate their child. Headstart was the best thing for my son.
