School Zones

Some people are driving 30km/h near schools even if there is NO sign for a school zone 30 km/h posted anywhere!

People! If there is no sign for a school zone speed limit, DO NOT drive under the posted speed limit!!

Not all schools have the 30 km/h.

  1. No. If I’m near a school I still reduce my speed, especially if kids are around. My concern is the safety of these kids not the inconvenience to you riding my arse because I reduced my speed for 1/2 a block.
If its such a big inconvenience to you, leave earlier.

    • I stopped for a bus with flashlight lights in a residential area. The woman behind me started to swear and laying on her horn.

I put my car in park ( in the middle of the road lol) I walked back to her car and asked her what her problem was. Lol. She had nothing to say.

The lights stopped flashing. The kids were safely off the road. The busdriver was Laughing his ass off and gave me a thumbs up as he drove by.

A child’s safety will never be compromised for some fools inconvenience.

Did they change the school bus rules in the city? When I took drivers ed a few years ago they said in the city you don’t stop for them unless it’s flashing red with the stop sign out. If it’s flashing yellow you go with caution. Not saying you’re in the wrong. In gibbons they flash red and you have to stop on both sides.

Does the poster realize that there are now Playground Zones near some playing fields where there aren’t even schools? The one I pass every day is from 730-2100 and virtually nobody slows down.

  3. City council approves 30 km/h speed limits near Edmonton playgrounds
City council voted unanimously Tuesday to lower speed limits to 30 km/h on roads near playgrounds, sports fields and ball diamonds by the end of this year. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/playground-speed-limit-safety-traffic-1.4286590

  4. Posted speed is the MAXIMUM speed not the minimum. I’ll drive slower in any school/playground area. Common sense

  8. Who’s the dumbass that submitted this?? Everyone should reduce speed near schools, playgrounds etc… whether there is a speed sign posted or not. It’s these small steps that keep kids safe.

I’ve noticed lots of elementary schools that are on busy roads that the side of the busy road is not a school zone. It really doesn’t make any sense

    • Oh. And i am not saying that you should ever speed. The speed lomit is the max to go. Best just to be the most engaged driver. Gonthe speed lomit when you can. Get out of peoples way if you can. Let them get the speeding tickets. Pay attention to lights. Dont sit and wait for five seconds after it turns green. And watch out for pedestrians and bikes and everyone. You dont own the road because you drive a car.

  12. The only school that doesn’t have school zone is a high school…. people really need to pay attention. But in a positive note at least they thought they had to slow down which is better than speeding….

OP you’re an idiot …if I’m near a school zone I’m going to slow down regardless if there’s a sign. Rather be 1 minute later at my destination than have a child get hurt

  15. Jeff Holden Jeff Holden says:

Some schools have even changed the time now if when you are to do 30km. Near me it was the standard 30 km from 8-16:30 (that’s 4:30). It has since been changed now to 7:30-21:00 (9:00). Not entirely sure why. After it ends it goes to 50 km for maybe 1/2 a km if that then jumps back down to 30km for a playground zone.

  16. I also slow down in the area by my house even after 430 because there are tons of kids in the neighbourhood. If that pisses you off, I’m fine with that. The safety of kids is more important to me than the asshole behind the wheel or keyboard that would disagree.

  17. Probably the same idiot that passed me doing at least 60 in a school zone yesterday! Asshat! !

    [0]
  18. Hey stupid… people drive slow for the safety of the children.

    [0]
  19. Perhaps OP needs to get a ticket in one of these zones so they understand why people are only going 30km. Safety first…All school zones are supposed to be 30km except highschools

  20. Good thing this is anonymous lol yikes op

    [0]
  21. The OP is right! We shouldn’t be slowing down around non posted school and playground areas… we should speed up! I don’t know about you… but I’m important. And I have a lot of important things to do… and I’ll be damned if any small person gets in the way of me getting to that red light up ahead 10 seconds quicker!!

  27. Newsflash to the new areas. If you don’t k ow about these new areas and the time restrictions, maybe you should be slapped with a heafty plan or read this post and become familiar with it. SLOW DOWN!

  28. Why not? I always have just to be safe as these are little people who just had their brains stuffed all day and are in the clouds going home!

That’s right! Speed through there at breakneck speeds, cause, y’know … some kid with their head buried in their phone might come dodging out from between the parked vehicles. Shame on you for being responsible! Tsk tsk

    [0]
  30. The streets surrounding Schools (k-6, k-9, 7-9) and playgrounds are ALL 30km zones from 8am-430pm. The only difference between the two is that around schools it is ‘on school days’ ie m-f traditionally. It’s been in the paper, social media and the news.

    [0]
  31. Or…you know there’s a reason people aren’t driving like assholes in the school zone. Here lets agree to this, my car, my rules. I will drive to the speed I feel is responsible in the area and conditions I’m in and if you don’t like it, go around me.

People in general are driving like 20 under the speed limit on the regular…. it’s annoying AF. Considering the roads are mostly fine, and we’ve been in the Winter/fall season for many weeks to adjust. People need to drive realistically. Not to slow not too fast. Around the speed limit give or take a few KM would do! Unless the roads are actually bad don’t be chicken shits and don’t be assholes speeding. A happy medium will do. Im tired of getting stuck behind the driver going 30 or 40 in a 60 xone with clear roads. Go to flow of traffic or get off the road. There’s my rant.

    [0]
  36. This is probably coming from the same moron who speeds down these streets, comes to a screeching halt when someone crosses the road and nearly misses vehicles parked on the side. Same little bitch I’ll sue when he can’t control his vehicle and hits mine.

I don’t live in Edmonton but the posted school zone in my town is 20 km/hr Mon-Fri 8-5. If it’s a school and there’s kids , slow your ass down. I don’t care if it’s posted or not.

  39. Hit my kid because you’re in such a big damn hurry, and the police will be the least of your concerns… I don’t give two squirts of shit how big a hurry you’re in , calm down around schools and playgrounds.

    [0]
  40. People ride my ass while I go through school zones and playground zones. If you’re that impatient go around hopefully there’s a cop sitting there waiting for your ass.

    [0]
  41. You said it posted speed LIMIT…limit as in maximum speed limit not minimum speed limit therefore people can drive at whatever speed they fucking want under the speed limit and there’s nothing wrong about them doing so…sometimes it’s a pain in the ass but in school and playground areas it’s just common sense

    [0]
  42. Giselle says:

Ya! You don’t need to be safe around all schools, just the ones that have signs up around them
