Stay away from Telus!

So note to anyone who’s thinking of getting, or currently has mobile service through TELUS RUN. RUN as fast as you can in the opposite direction. Since the start of our contract in January 2016, we’ve had problems we were assured would be taken care of. Every month we’ve had overages without explanation (apparently one month we used 25+ GB of data but neither their nor our checks could corroborate that), payments go missing, our phones are cut off every month, sometimes twice a month, for their errors. Each with 2 x $35 charges.

So in July we got another one of those “wtf” bills, apparently we were being charged for photo and video messages while I was alone in Fort St John and my baby girl was in Edmonton, so obvs people were sending me pictures and videos of her. Each time I got one or sent one, we were hit with a charge. About $300 worth to be exact. After multiple calls back and forth, I was credited around $100. September I get another “wtf” bill and spent the better part of a week on and off the phone with Telus. They wiggle some stuff around and I pay off the balance (that I still wasn’t happy with btw) but it’s either pay and get your phone back on, or pay $1500 to get out of the contract. The total remaining balance on the account was $48.61, so all was good until mid October as the rep said, when the next bill would be out. Early October, phones get shut off again. Call Telus and was on hold for 3 hours, then I’m told the balance is $500-some. How? Dunno. They don’t either. I make another big payment and phones are back on. Cool. Beginning of November, phones off again. Call in, balance is $700-some. Still doesn’t make sense but I make another big payment, phones back on. Mid November, cut off. Balance $600-some. Another big payment made. Ask how tf they’re coming up with these numbers, they tell me I never paid in July, August or September so there’s been a balance this entire time…. bish where?! $400 unaccounted for apparently, So every time I get a new bill it bumps it up a ton. Ok maybe that happened, but in August alone they got about $800. September, probably $500. October $300, November $450 or so.

How exactly can a phone bill be multiple thousands of dollars in one month? I have no idea. So now this morning, I’m having a conversation thru text and replies stop coming. I try calling them, says phone is cut off. Again. I have now been on hold for an hour trying to figure out wtf is going on. The automated system says I have to pay $561 to get reconnected, and that the total account balance is $700 and some.
Can anyone explain this to me? Because Telus sure can’t. My mom cancelled her Telus plan after over 20 years just last month because she had the same problem. People I’ve spoken to have the same problem. I think it’s time for a class action lawsuit or internal investigation by the CCTS.

Anyways sorry for the long post, but stay FAR FAR away from Telus!

Oh, and before I forget. When we were offered this plan originally under the loyalty program for re signing, we were offered an S7 and 6S for $0 with a plan that would be about $120/month for both, with 4gb of data. We got 2.5 gig for $150 total, so we changed it back to the 4gb we were promised… monthly bill before tax? $190.
AND we had to pay a bit upfront for the phones 🙄

That’s terrible. The control they have is to much. Rip offs

  7. Telus claimed I was using 25+ gigs of data a month. Yet when I was with Bell, I never reached my data and I actually used less data with Telus. They couldn’t tell me how or where the data was going.

And every month, they sent me to collections when I was slowly trying to pay off their ridiculous bill and knew I was a broke university student.

They can go eat a dick.

  8. I switched from Bell to Telus because Bell was dinging me and was doing nothing to help. Telus has been great so far. I got the phone I wanted and not being charged a fucktonn

  11. For the people who are having ridiculous data usage overages, is it possible that people are using your phones as hot spots? Maybe your phone isn’t locked down? Just a suggestion.

Same things happens to me. I work from home. I use wifi. In 10 years with virgin I never went over my 3G of data. With Telus I was over every month. So I changed it to the 7G. Somehow it’s still over every month. So I change it to the 10G and it’s still over. It’s really insane. I reset the data counter on my phone each month when the bills resets and the data my phone is showing is not matching the data Telus is charging me for. They shrug and say they have no Idea and I must be using something data intensive away from my wifi or my wifi isn’t working. But my internet is through them too. So if it’s not working that’s their fault. My contract is up in January and I’ll be going back to virgin.

I was with bell and had the same problems you speak of. My phone broke was under warranty I went to one of their stores to get it fixed, I waited half an hour for someone to talk to me because they were playing on their phones, and while helping me the person was still texting away, then he told me no you have no warranty. I was like weird okay, a couples days later I phone to double check and they were like actually your warranty expired yesterday. I explained to them the guy told me it wasn’t, and they refused to do anything. 12 years with them and they wouldn’t do a damn thing about it. I switched to Telus and have never had ANY issues. Which is weird because I streamed from my phone and I’ve never had any of those issues you are speaking of. I’m really sorry that happening to you, but stop paying them if you’ve already paid them. Get your bank or credit card statement showing the date and amount you’ve paid them for them saying you didn’t pay it and they have to give you that money back or credit it onto your account, if it’s a credit card tell them to reverse it because they clearly didn’t get it.

  20. Why would you keep paying that? I would of just paid to get out of the contract! Bell is no better. They owed us a $200 and I fought from March till now when the bell store we went to finally paid that $200 I refused to pay. They were also fighting with Bell about it knowing damn well the $200 was owed to us. My phone was constantly shut off or restrictions put on it because of their “errors”

Telus sucks! I switched to bell years ago…awesome customer service and fairly decent pricing. As soon as my husbands contract ran out he jumped ship too! The worst.

  22. Check your settings. You need to turn off the option where it states that you will revert to data if you don’t have a strong wifi connection. You should also check that imessage is on. There are a few other ways that use data that you may not know about. So under cellular data you can turn off all the apps and programs that you don’t want to use access using data. This will cut down on your data a lot.

  25. Telus does the same data overage to me… impossible. My data is only turned on when a friend sends a pic. And I’m always on Wi-Fi.

I had all those suspicious overages with bell. I switched to telus in August and my data use has dropped 30%

  27. At this rate you’re better off lumping that $1500 and pulling your account.

  28. Really? We just switched to telus from bell. That better not happen

  31. I just received a notice from Telus that I use too much data for my plan. Last month I sent 3 text messages, no phone calls. So far this month I haven’t used my phone at all, not once and I’m waiting to see what kind of crap they send me. I’ll then go into a full outlet and let everyone know avout Telus. It is too bad that I’m no longer under contract just have a small plan because I rarely use my phone but do like to have it for when I’m on the hiway, and one never knows.

  32. Something has had to have happened since the crackdown on cell phone companies charging for roaming and data overage from the CRTC. I have shared a family plan between 3 teenagers and myself with TELUS mobility – we had a 6G plan and rarely ever went over, and still do not. My mom is with Bell Canada and the past few months after replacing her old iphone, she has hit over 24G of data just herself – they even told her to turn her iMessage off, which is ridiculous. Seems a bit suspicious Karen Tomiak

  33. Well if you run from Telus you better not go to Rogers or Bell. They have worse track records.

Experience is one of life’s greatest teachers. Telus is definitely an experience.
When it comes to telus, keep on top of you billing statements… and Do Not Give In to their bs.!
Never ever sign/get locked into a contract – chances are you’ll reget it … and I see you are.
You have the right to know where and what is causing overages. They have the obligation to explain and produce the result(s).
They can mix up customers / customers numbers / they can make a local number (yours for example) into a long-distance number. Don’t ask how they manage to do that, but it’s been done.
Their people can be extremely rude and arrogant when trying to get information in sorting things out.
Their people are often not well trained… or maybe they are well trained to spin people around.
You can lose hours and days (as you have already) in trying to figure out and understand what is going on.
Do you have any idea of how many people they stiff on a regular basis? The trusting people who don’t check their statements and just pay? Venture to guess? I would venture to guesstimate hundreds of thousands maybe millions if you could add it all up.
Our cell #s are thru telus. We opt for very basic, no bells and whistles. Previous contracts expired and we’ve been on month to month for a few years now. Since month to month, somehow the issues we experienced when on contract went away. *this in itself speaks volumes!
Only reason we have our cells thru telus, is because *Shaw (the best IMHO) isn’t into cellular phone services.
