Warning Dog Owners Buena Vista Park

The rowing club dock can be dangerous for dogs. A week & a half ago, I was there when a small dog fell off the dock (at red area in photo). The dog went under the dock & didn’t come out the other side.

Three people went into the water to try to reach the dog under the dock, I ran up to the rowing club to ask if they could lift the dock, they said it would take 30-40 people & 3 dogs had drowned there last year.

After 20 minutes the dog had not emerged from the water. I did call the City to ask that a warning sign be put up. Please be careful & avoid that spot with your dog.

  1. Holy crap! I hope the dog was ok. For sure the need a danger sign up.

  2. Such bad comments. All the writer of the post is warning everyone. If you have nothing nice to say keep it to yourself. Thank you shoutout edmonton. I appreciate the information

  3. Manon Aubry Buena Vista is off leash the dock is not

  4. Matt Johnston it’s not the city fault. There doesn’t need to be a fence to know if it’s off leash or not. There also doesn’t need to be signs. They have their maps on their website and at the entrance of all dog parks showing where the off leash areas are. If you decide to ignore the sign at the beginning or not check online where the off leash signs are then that’s on the owner. As you can see by the photo above the doc is clearly out of off leash boundaries. This same photo can be found at the start of off leash areas. Want to own a dog and take them to off leash parks then do your research. Easy as that

    • Jennifer Bauer says:

That’s a little unfair. Those maps (particularly at that park) can be difficult to read, and it’s not always easy to tell when you’ve crossed a boundary when you don’t have the map in front of you. The maps for that park labels streets through the park the last I looked – it’s not very clear where things are on it. The off leash areas bleed right into the on leash ones with no obvious transitions. That same park has signs for cyclists telling them where cycling isn’t allowed in the park. There’s no reason besides stubbornness to not clearly mark the transition for dogs as well.

  5. Danielle Jakielaszek yea real common sense a dock that is nothing like the millions of others out there. Real common sense we should all just know that. I grew up at a lake and have never seen a dock you can’t swim under. You’re just an asshole.

  6. Is there fencing , is there string lines is there spray pain is there signs if not it’s the city’s fault simple

  7. Manon Aubry Manon Aubry says:

Sabrina Nicole Buena Vista is off leash and last time I was there(couple of years) there was no leash sign at the dock.

  8. Off leash is fine, but a RECALL is even more important. Young, old, purebred or rescue should come when it’s called, and if he doesn’t he shouldn’t be off leash.

  9. Thank you for warning people of this danger. Unfortunately, there are a lot of irresponsible pet owners out there that would ignore a warning sign.

  10. Jessica Jane Jessica Jane says:

    This is terrible news.

  11. Three dogs have drowned there . . . and nothing has been done about it?

    • Lois M Heritage what’s there to be done? The owners broke the law and paid the price. You could put thousands of signs and people would still go. Unfortunately some people learn the hard way

  12. Matt Johnston there are very clear signs along the trails when it’s on leash and off. I’ve never encountered a part where it’s at all confusing. I’ve walked the entire trail system with my dogs.

  13. Danielle Jakielaszek where is your heart???someone is grieving the loss of a pet and all you can do is be proud of your common sense…

  14. The pier is owned and maintained by the Rowing Club, it is for club use. The river is fast moving and is NOT a lake so due care should be exercised, always. The area is not off leash and if your dog cannot be controlled the humans walking the dog should avoid the area.

  15. Danielle Jakielaszek if there is a dock they usually come out the other side. Obviously this is not a normal dock. It’s called common sense.

  16. Merissa Stemkowski I’m sure alot of people dont know exactly where the offleash ends.is there fences, signs ect

  17. Jean Mary Jean Mary says:

Amber Mussetter is this where you take nori?:)

  18. Jaque Mehoff Jaque Mehoff says:

Whenever I’m out in the area I like to have my dogs flotation device on just incase he decides to jump into the water! More of a chance to retrieve him if anything happens

  19. Jaque Mehoff Jaque Mehoff says:

Thanks for your input Darryl Pokrant as we like to believe in common sense

  20. Dogs shouldn’t be off leash in that area. This is the owners fault and could have be prevented had they followed the law and kept their dog on leash. Here’s a photo of the Buena Vista off leash area as it seems a lot of people don’t know where the off leash park is. The green is where dogs can be off leash. The black circle is the dock

  21. Kara Fehr actually your wrong. That part is not apart of the off leash park so yes any owner whose dog is off leash can receive a fine of $250. The green is the off leash the black circle is the dock

  22. Dogs should be kept on leash. This is way too scary.

    • Jules Maria Jules Maria says:

Josie O’Reilly it’s called an off leash park for a reason. Owners fault. Watch your dogs.

    • Jules Maria most dog owners have no control over their dogs. I don’t think the dock is part of the off leash area.

    • Jules Maria the dock isn’t apart of the off leash area! Green is the off leash area

    • Merissa Stemkowski funny how some people think they can do whatever 5hey want them when their dog gets into danger due to their ignorance and negligence they look to blame someone else rather than take responsibility.

    • Josie O’Reilly exactly. I see so many dog owners who are uneducated about the laws of where dogs can be and when they can be off leash.

    • Terra Bracha Terra Bracha says:

Josie O’Reilly I didn’t see anyone blaming anyone here. Shit happens and it’s just a smidge off of the off leash area. I’m sure the owner feels like a big piece of shit right now. Everyone on here should remember that they might see these comments.
This event is sad and super unfortunate. I am sorry for their loss.

    • Merissa Stemkowski funny how some people think they can do whatever 5hey want them when their dog gets into danger due to their ignorance and negligence they look to blame someone else rather than take responsibility.

  23. Lisa Wood some blame though does lay on the owner though. I wouldn’t allow a small dog without a leash to go on a dock as they typically are not strong enough to swim in the currents of the river and could easily be swooped in by the undertow. Dog owners should be vigilant, just like with kids around water. I wouldn’t even let my lab who is an extremely good swimmer go on a dock like that without a leash or probably any dock in fear they do get stuck under it

  24. Dawn Saumer Dawn Saumer says:

Kara fehr the dock is NOT part of the off leash area. Owners need to be responsible. Our husky fell off a dock as a puppy. He didn’t get swept down rapids thanks to his leash. Not even 10 mins later we watched 2 other dogs fall off same dock. One had a leash one didn’t. One made it. One didn’t

  26. Lisa Wood It’s illegal for your dog to be off leash there. So if you’re doing this it’s 100% YOUR FAULT LISA.

  27. Kara Fehr dog owners need to be vigilant and should know their dog. I would never allow a small dog to play on any type of dock without a leash for the potential of falling in. Smaller dogs are often not strong enough to swim in the currents of the river. I probably wouldn’t even let my lab go on that type of dock without a leash and she’s an extremely strong swimmer

  28. Aimee Robb Aimee Robb says:

The rowing club is not part of the off leash park…

  29. Aimee Robb Aimee Robb says:

On another note, that is NOT part of the off leash area, and your dog should be on a leash…

  30. Thank you so much for taking the time to inform this community of the unknown safety hazard. It’s really appreciated. <3

  31. Kara Fehr if your worried about your dog falling off the dock and going underneath, please keep it on a leash

  32. Kara Fehr Kara Fehr says:

Darryl Pokrant there is a sign at the rowing club. It says don’t let dogs on the dock if there is the rowing club on the dock basically but if there isn’t anyone, it’s free for all because it is still an OFF leash park.

  33. Lisa Wood oh and a quick question, are you stupid enough to let a child play on the dock?

  34. Lisa Wood oh and a quick question, are you stupid enough to let a child play on the dock?

  35. Lisa Wood Lisa Wood says:

Danielle Jakielaszek really. Unless it happened to you, you probably wouldn’t think to not let your dog on that dock thinking it might end up stuck underneath. Twat.

  37. Kara Fehr Kara Fehr says:

I’ve had to pull my dogs up from that area so they didn’t go under. That’s why you watch your dogs and make sure they know to not go on that side of the dock.

  38. Lisa Wood Lisa Wood says:

Really Ian Lambertus, you gave this a laughing emoji? You’re an asshole and can go fuck all the way off.

  39. How about keeping your dogs off the dock . Its not there for them

  40. pfft. i call bullshit. peddle your lies elsewhere, fear mongerer…

    • Ian Lambertus unfortunately it’s accurate. I’ve watched a couple people managed to actually get their dogs out, but I can definitely see dogs getting stuck under the docks. Especially when the water is higher and the currents are stronger.

  41. Is that an off-leash area?

  42. I’m sorry…but I’d be jumping in after my dog…wouldn’t every other dog owner????

  43. Why wouldn’t an owner get in the water to rescue their dog? Am I missing some info on this dock?

  44. Vicki Baird Vicki Baird says:

Thank you for the warning, some people do appreciate it!

I have never seen as many holier than thou attitudes in my whole life. And people who never make mistakes. Wow. A gathering of saints.
Thank you for the warning and I am sorry for your loss.

  46. I don’t really get this. Never seen a dock that you can’t swim under. What am I missing?
