What to do about abandoned cat?

My niece was in an abuse relationship so I took her in with her cat. She went back to the relationship and left the cat at my place.

The problem with this is:
1. I am horribly allergic to this cat, so there is no way for me to keep her.
2. The cat is a pure bred Bengal and was being used in a bully breeding program so I am super apprehensive about putting her on Kijiji. I don’t want anyone being able to use her for breeding. She has had a hard enough life.

I can’t afford to spay her. I can’t afford to drop her off at the SPCA because they charge for it and I don’t have any extra money. Looking for suggestions on what to do 🙁

  9. Make the adopter pay for the spay as a condition of adoption. Have them pick up the cat from the vet clinic AFTER she is spayed. Also, contact the breeder she was purchased from, as their may be a clause in the sales contract that states they will take her back.

Tell your niece to get her cat back. It’s not your responsibility. Put it in a kennel and drop it off.

I’m experienced with Bengals and would take her in a heartbeat (including getting her fixed, I don’t want to add to the overpopulation of cats and would be happy to have her spayed prior to pick up). However another option is to contact rescue groups (ARTS, Zoes, CAWS are a few to consider).

Feel free to pm me. Otherwise best of luck ♡ I hope it all works out.

  20. Surrender the cat to a rescue. Probably the best option for screening and finding a great home for the cat.

  22. Usually breeders of pure bred cats will take the cat back and arrange to spay and find a good home for it. If you don’t know who the breeder is, there is one Bengal cat breeder in Edmonton which you can find by Googling “bengal cat breeder edmonton”. They may be able to give you advice or help you find a new home for the cat. There are many people out there that would like a pure bred cat but would rather pay less and take an adult. In general, reputable breeders of pure cat and dog breeds have concern for displaced animals of whatever breed they work with and will at least be willing to give you good advice.

  24. Don’t send her to just any shelter please, rehome her look at one of the fellow Bengal owners here. Bengals are not same as other cats. I have a pregnant bengal snow right now I can not accommodate her. But… Please message the other Bengal owners. It will be best for her. NO SHELTER if you can’t get rid of her I will take her I have Bengal groups I belong to and she will be rehomed properly.

  25. I realize the niece left the cat behind, however does the aunt have the legal ability to give/sell the cat? They can track ownership via the microchip. OP, I would check into that before you do anything. I suppose it comes down to how long has she left the cat with you? A day, a week, a month? And what was your agreement with her about it. You don’t need ongoing legal troubles because of this!

Contact a local Bengal breeder for advice, they would be able to direct you to a bengal rescue.

  32. The breeder might take her back or look for a Bengal rescue – contact Edmonton Humane, for low income people they may waive the fee – but note they are very full now – tell your daughter to send funds to cover the spay of the cat.

  33. Bengals are not for the beginner cat owner. They are beautiful but part wild cat! To those of you saying you want her and don’t have Bengal experience, you’re all crazy. To those of you with Bengal experience, you are qualified. But this cat still needs to go back to her original owner. If this cat is from a breeder, that breeder keeps track of their cats for life. Then and only then could this cat potentially be given to a rescue. Standard protocol is to give the cat back to the breeder. What a mess

  34. I would pay to have her spayed. That way both of us can be sure she wont be used for breeding again. Please PM as I would be happy to do that for the cat.

  43. I wonder if she was stolen from the breeder? Odd for the breeder not to have a spay contract. If she was given on a breeder contract she can’t be given away and needs to go back to breeder.
