Why do people go 40 in a 60 zone

On 17 street southbound from about 34 Ave to 23 ave it goes down to one lane and everyone I mean everyone always goes 40 kmh… I don’t understand it’s not even rush hour and people still go 40 kmh. The speed limit signs clearly posted 60 kmh and I really don’t think you need to go 40 kmh… I have lived out here for 8 months and it has not changed. I drive this road almost everyday. I do know that yes I don’t need to go 60 kmh but it is posted 60 kmh and we are still going 40 kmh. People read the speed limit signs and follow them. And when I pull up beside you don’t give me dirty looks for driving your bumper learn how to drive please…

Ride my bumper, expect a brake check. Drive according to the conditions. Oh, it’s nice out and there’s nothing on the road? It’s called black ice.

  2. I hear ya, I always wonder why does NO ONE go 70 on 97st north of 137ave?

    [0]
  3. Robin Fudge McCarthy I’m not familiar with that area, are there alot if speed cams?

  4. I agree the drivers seem to be getting worse than better lmao

    Ooooh I hate slowpokes
    Just like Calgary Tr.
just passed 34 ave speed changes to 70 then right after 31 ave to 90 km/hr !
    90
Yet so many people create traffic jam by going 60. That is big difference
People wake up or don’t drive

    [0]
  6. Charlene Piche none that I’ve ever seen. Lived in this area for 18 years. The area the op mentioned is the worst. There is an entrance to Silverberry, with traffic lights, and at least one crosswalk, before you get to the Meadows Rec Centre, then another crosswalk before you get to 23rd Ave. Those things can slow traffic quite a bit during rush hour. Problem is people tend to go 40 even without traffic.

  7. Jack Shultz Jack Shultz says:

Perhaps if that asshole Mayor IVESON would take some of the money he is financially raping Edmontonians of and fix the God damn roads in this city people would drive the limit and not be doing 40 in fear of wrecking their car.
( not that it matters as the shit the city is using to clear our roads are infact doing more damage then good…. not just to the roads but to our cars aswell )

    [0]
  8. That’s not good at all

  9. Its either people speed like crazy people or they go 20 under the speed limit .. you can’t win in Edmonton

  10. To many people in this city have purchased their license and didn’t earn it

    • Shawna Jones Shawna Jones says:

Sherry Goguen, you can see who did by watching the immigrant drivers trying to park by ESL schools. They drive backwards around corners, yield signs are invisible and they dont understand what right of way means. Awful!

      [0]
    • Sherry Goguen this is accurate unfortunately. A gentleman I know came from another country and wanted to get his license and do driver training and he said that one place quoted him a class 5 license for $500, and if you wanted a trucking license (class 2 maybe, I don’t know the classes and maybe I should) it was $2,000. He ended up going to AMA and doing the driver training and actually getting his license. Scary that this goes on in the city!

      [0]
    • Candice Rochelle I know it’s accurate. I wasn’t kidding. Lol. Pathetic right. Sad the price hasn’t gone up since the 90’s!

      [0]
    • Sherry Goguen it’s pretty scary! And I bet it makes up for more than 50% of the traffic problems in the city

      [0]
    • Candice Rochelle yup. And my insurance went up because of all the accidents

Drive to road conditions, not speed limit, dipshit.

  12. They should be confident enough to drive the speed limit. But you are WRONG to ride their bumper. I agree people going to slow when there is no reason to is a pain. You riding their bumper is a 100 times worse. If you drive it all the time and you know people skis down leave earlier.

  13. Leah Ross Leah Ross says:

Slow drivers suck, agreed. But tailgaters suck worse and are much more dangerous. Stop that.

    [0]
    • Rye Weskey Rye Weskey says:

The do go hand and hand, tailgaters cause people to slow down, the person in front has to ensure ample time to stop and may even slowly brake to ensure the low I.Q. Tailgaiter has ample time to look up from their iFruit phone and start braking as well. Especially on Icy roads, so really they do it to themselves

      [0]
    • Rye Weskey Rye Weskey says:

But then you have retards who think absolutely everyone is tailgating, even when you are three to four car lengths back, I never have to brake, but they seem to like tapping their brakes, it’s just stupid people who can’t properly judge a distance.

      [0]
  14. Limit means max. Not everyone is in a hurry to get things done or rush and rush until life’s no fun.

    [0]
    • Actually it’s posted as a safe speed for the road. Driving too slow has been proven to be just as dangerous as driving too fast and, as such, if caught, you can get ticketed for it too.

      [0]
    • Under perfect conditions.

Those don’t exist in Alberta between September and may.

      [0]
    • They’re in a hurry I dont why

      [0]
    • Meagan Morales While it’s true that going too slow is dangerous, I’ve yet to see people complaining about the photo radar vans issuing tickets for it.

      [0]
    • Andrea McLellan What table? Going too slow is a thing but that puts a lot of subjectivity in its enforcement. You’re never going to get a ticket going 50 in a 60 but you will get one going 70 in a 60.

      [0]
    • Alden Gushnowski I’m trying to find the article that was recently posted. It was talking about focusing on drivers going under the posted speed limit and how they will be cracking down on it. Driving under the speed limit IS dangerous!

      [0]
    • Alden when I took my drivers test my only reduction was for going 40 in a 50 zone.

      [0]
    • Amber Houssian How much was your ticket for?

      [0]
    • She said drivers test. She didn’t say she got a ticket. It’s not an arguable case. Driving under the speed limit is dangerous and they have and can ticket it regardless the amount. Most cases they will just give you a warning.

      [0]
    • Andrea McLellan That was exactly my point. She didn’t get a ticket. And a road inspector is not a police officer.

You can’t make a blanket statement that “driving under the speed limit is dangerous” because everything boils down to road conditions and flow of traffic.

      [0]
    • Alden Gushnowski and believe it or not in some areas they believe driving slower is more danger than when people exceed the speed limit.
In New York being ticketed for going too slow can be a higher ticket than being ticketed for going over. It’s called blocking or impeding traffic.

      [0]
    • It boils down to the fact that there are millions of Albertans who have personally verified Alden’s statement that speeding gets you a ticket but no evidence has been presented for your statement. Just that you may or may not have read an article and you may or may not know an old man who got a ticket for going too slow without sharing road conditions.
There isn’t a judge in the province that would allow a ticket to stick if its snowing or icy out for going ‘too slow’ so calm down Lead foot Lucy.

      [0]
    • Andrea McLellan 80 on the Henday is not dangerous if you’re pulling a trailer or if maybe you’re on a donut on your way to the tire place.

And yes she may have gotten dinged on the road test but there are many reasons why. Perhaps the instructor was verifying that she was reading road signs correctly or that she was able to handle a car at the max speed.

And bringing up New York? Why not bring up the German autobahn as well?

Yes going too slow can get you a ticket. I never denied that. All I said was that it was subjective to the officer’s discretion whereas speeding is more technical as its measured.

      [0]
    • Alden Gushnowski if you can bring up the obvious like road conditions and pulling a trailer why can I not bring up New York?! Unsafe is unsafe and it’s something that’s ticketed everywhere. Not necessarily statistically recorded hence my comment about recently there was a mention that they want to focus on slow drivers (I’ll dumb it down since the obvious had to be brought up…given the conditions) lol…

      [0]
    • Andrea McLellan Ever drive in New York City? I have and its apples to oranges to anything happening in Alberta.

      [0]
    • Have you ever driven in different parts of the city?! Apples to oranges also.
I just liked how in New York they enforce the how dangerous driving under the speed limit is. Their fines given out are higher than what they give to speeders. I was sharing some info.

      [0]
    • Andrea McLellan I was a courier with over 700,000 km in 9 years, so yeah you can say I’ve seen it all Edmonton wise.

      [0]
    • Rye Weskey Rye Weskey says:

Driving under the limit is just an excuse to continue being a poor driver. Probably can’t plan two blocks ahead and that’s why you dip slowly across three lanes at the intersection you’re turning at, slow drivers usually have slow or low brain function too.

      [0]
    • Rye Weskey Do you have proof that slow drivers have low brain function or are you yourself exhibiting low brain function?

You’re probably the kind of driver who speeds like a demon and then waits at the same red light.

  27. Anyone complaining about the tailgater get over it the real problem is the crappy drivers that act like they can’t go faster… I’ve driven that road and just after the co op gas station if you turn right it’s a residential area and people go 60kmh most times once they have turned off of 17 street I’ve driven down there and I turn off after the co op cause I can’t stand the slow kluster fuck of traffic on 17 street and people going 40kmh… But when they turn into the residential area they go 60kmh in a residential area…. WTF
Learn how to drive or take a bus

Theres a difference between cautious and ridiculous. If someone is scared to drive normally and have to go 20 under posted speed (on good road conditions) thrn they maybe shouldnt drive and find different mode of transportation… Same with those who speed excessively. Both can be ticketed

      [0]
    • Rye Weskey Rye Weskey says:

    [0]
    • Darla Rae Miller you lock your brakes doing 40 in a 60 zone and get hit you are the at fault nobody else…
Maybe you need to leave earlier or later.

Darla Rae Miller this is why I have a dash cam. Its insurance Fraud to cause an accident because you break checked someone. Good luck claiming there was a cat in the road when my dash cam shows your negligence behind the wheel.

    • Trista Blume Trista Blume says:

Darla Rae Miller or maybe your should be a dick. Slamming on your breaks is a jerk move, especially if you are slowing down traffic for absolutely no reason. Drive with in the limit or get off the road.

      [0]
    • Graham Frost Omgosh!! It was black ice! A squirrel or better yet, dont tailgate!!! Tailgating is a chargeable offence, keep that dash cam on!!!! Lmao

Darla Rae Miller if you are on black ice you would skid… Also dash cams are 1080p full HD. I can read a plate of douche bags who speed past me on the henday at 150kph. Don’t be a fucking idiot on the road sweetheart. Insurance fraud can cost you your license. Driving is a privilege not a right.

Maybe driver education will improve now that registries are no longer privatized.

  51. Keep in mind that the road instructor is also testing you to determine if you understand the speed limit, that you are actually reading the signs, and that you can handle the car at the posted speed limit. I lost points for failing to yield to a pedestrian and then when talking to a relative who is a police officer he said I never would have received a ticket for what transpired.

    [0]
  52. Keith Currie Keith Currie says:

I see a lot of receivers that try to give quarterbacks advise… that’s why you’re a receiver… you’re probably a shitty driver lol. Our limits are posted for our winter driving as well…. take a look at our on and off ramp speed limits… every vehicle can do them safely with a higher speed in summer. The suggested limit is winter limits…. if you’re following a person doing 50 in a 60 zone with good rds, they’re the hazard, non experienced drivers. Idiots doing 40 or 50 are really the hazard and didnt learn how to drive on Alberta rds.

    [0]
  56. Win Chan Win Chan says:

It’s not a law, but just common sense. Unless the traffic conditions are not safe to drive around the speed limit, a large discrepancy of travelling speeds is shown to cause more accidents. What happens is people will try to make passes or slam their brakes at times that they otherwise wouldn’t.

    [0]
    • Win Chan absolutely! Although, you can still be ticketed for driving to slow. I agree with you 100%

      [0]
    • Win Chan Win Chan says:

Andrea McLellan There have been cases of that. If you Google or search on Youtube for it, there are many interesting videos. It’s not technically a “too slow” ticket sometimes; it becomes an unsafe driving offence. If you’re in the left lane it’s even bigger reason, since technically the left lane is meant for passing, and the ones to the right to drive in. Larger vehicles, especially Semi trucks, also need much more braking distance and are more likely to run over you if you drive at an unnaturally low speed.

      [0]

I drive this road everyday! Feel your pain! This end of the city is getting bigger and the road needs to be widened to accommodate all the traffic!

    [0]
  59. We need to start handing out tickets from photo radar for going to slow in zones like that as well. If a early 90s Toyota Celica with summer tires is fine on 34th street from whitemud to baseline road in the winter, then anyone saying 60 on the section your describing in their newer and heavier cars maybe shouldn’t be driving. Using ” kids, conditions and lack of experience ” as excuses shows that our testing system is out of date and alot of people get licences when they really shouldn’t

Lol, speed cams, that’s a moron’s excuse, you can drive the limit and not get a ticket. Slow drivers are high, stupid, drunk, on their phones or have anxiety, they’ll tell you it’s about safety or not getting tickets, like my mother inlaw, she can’t drive down sloped roads because they are too scary, when forced to she “eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!’s” the whole way down, she’s one of the ones that drives 80 in the 110 parts of the yellowhead because “eeeeeeeeeeeee!”. It’s fucking dangerous and stupid when parents let kids grow into adults without addressing their petty anxiety or waa waas. Wouldn’t be too shocked if the people driving 40 in 60 zones have similar mental problems, nowhere to be at 8am during rush hour? Then why the fuck are you on the road, stupid people and their endless list of excuses, never dealing with their own problems and forcing society to adapt to them, fuck off
